Post Cincinnati Post Thursday, July 31, 2003 http://www.cincypost.com/2003/07/31/bird073103.html Handogs mix politics with alt-country sound (scroll down for 'dots mention) by Rick Bird Band members have names like Automatic Slim and Texas Tex, playing steel pedal and insurgent country-rock twang. They sound like they should hail from Nashville or Austin. But the four members of the Hangdogs are New York City bred. The Hangdogs bring their gritty alternative country and leftist lyrics to town 10 p.m. Friday at the Southgate House, Newport ($5). Opening will be the Stapletons and Murder Creek Boys (the Stapletons teamed with Jeff Roberson of Len's Lounge). The Hangdogs came out of the big city in the mid-'90s playing some hinterland twang laced with liberal East Coast lyrics and a loud punk-country attitude. It's the writing of lead singer Matt Grimm that gives the band its edge, loaded with irreverent songs knocking the political establishment and the corporate consumerism culture, especially on their latest CD "Wallace '48." The title cut salutes the progressive politician Henry Wallace, the former vice president who was run out of political town in the '50s for supposedly having "Communist leanings." The band best sums up its attitude in its own release about the new CD: "Older now and possibly even more culturally irrelevant in the current jingoist climate, (Hangdogs) have tens of songs to delight and inspire, but mostly to coalesce and vent collective anger." Bon Jovi unplugged : Bon Jovi fans are going to either feel cheated or thrilled with the band's show at Riverbend Friday. The group has announced it will go unplugged for its last four shows, which includes the Cincinnati stop. The first half of the concert will be an all-acoustic set, while the second half will be the group's usual electric pop-metal performance. Bon Jovi wraps up a worldwide tour next month that began almost a year ago. Tickets are still available for the Riverbend show ($87.75, $80.25, $37.75; Ticketmaster) with opening act the Goo Goo Dolls. Odd CD: Cincinnati rockers Odd Man Out are out with a new CD, "Shades of Real," which is as fine a straight-ahead rock album as you'll hear this summer. There are 13-cuts full of melodic, no frills sonic hooks from the trio of Mark Brasington (lead vocals, guitar), Brian Malone (drums, percussion) and Peter Shepard (bass). It is a thick sound, full of guitar and vocal overdubs, that is perhaps a little more exotic than the band plays live as a power trio. Band members acknowledge they confronted that age-old issue in rock -- whether to record a sound they may not be able to duplicate live. "We wanted to make this its own stand-alone disc -- reach for a melody, find it and work something straight forward and memorable around it. We did take a lot more advantage of the studio atmosphere," said Brasington. "We looked at this as a disc project and did explore that with studio overdubs and wanted to find out how we can tease out some of those melodies." It's an elegant production that still keeps a back-to-basic rock approach without getting lost in studio tricks. And there are enough clever hooks on these songs that duplicating them live should not be a problem. As Brasington puts it, "There is a lot of guitar on the disc with simple melody lines that may be tucked back. We just wanted to provide some texture without making it showy." The band holds a CD release party 9 p.m. Saturday at the Madison Theater, Covington. Opening acts, Spiff and Jason Ludwig. As a special feature the band plans a late-night set in which it will perform Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" in its entirety after a set of original material. 'Dots road trip : The psychodots play a rare concert Friday, but it's a road trip for fans in these parts. The trio of Rob Fetters, Bob Nyswonger and Chris Arduser perform in Indianapolis at 9 p.m. (CDT) Friday at Clancy's Pub, 5135 S. Emerson Ave., Beech Grove ($10). "Some hard-core fans in Indy just threw up some money and so we went for it," Fetters said about the show. The veteran Cincinnati power trio last played a show-stealing set at Pepsi Jammin' on Main in May. Meanwhile, the three 'Dots continue their collaboration with Adrian Belew working on a new Bears album. Songwriter night returns: Allyns Cafe, Columbia-Tusculum, is bringing back a regular Tuesday songwriter's night. Eric Diedrichs, former Simpletons lead singer-songwriter, will host the weekly sessions starting at 9:30 p.m. Diedrichs will open the night with some of his own tunes then welcome any walk-in singer-songwriters. The evenings will conclude with featured guest performers. Edensong finale : The Queen City Balladeers' four-week, free folk concert series Edensong comes to a close at 7 p.m. Friday at the Seasongood Pavilion, Eden Park. Performing will be Ma Crow, Jamon Zeiler, Wishing Chair, Lenny Hall and Dave Hawkins with Celtic Core. The next big event for the Balladeers will be to celebrate their 40th anniversary with a show from mountain music legend Jean Ritchie, Sept. 14 at the Leo Coffeehouse in the Old St. George's Church, Corryville. For information on the event, www.qcballadeers.org. Commonly Jazz : The best free jazz series of the summer kicks off next Thursday (Aug. 7) as Fifth Third Commonly Jazz returns to Jordan Commons (formerly Swifton Commons), Bond Hill at 6 p.m. the next four Thursdays. Kicking off the series is nationally-acclaimed sax man Javon Jackson performing with the Mike Wade Quintet. Other dates and artists: Mario Abney Sextet, Aug. 14; Segundo Venida, Aug. 21; and Wilbert Longmire with Bill Caffie, Aug. 28. Happenings : Singer-songwriter Ryan Adcock will perform with his full band at 9 p.m. Saturday at the Yorkshire Club, Newport. Opening act, Robbie Reider ($5) -- Featured artist Friday and Saturday at the Blue Wisp Jazz Club, downtown is Dan Faehnle and his quartet. Faehnle recently wrapped up a tour as the guitarist for Diana Krall. ++ psychodots ++ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2003 08:48:40 -0400 From: Mary Bosken Subject: Blues Fest/Ricky Nye City Beat Vol 9, Issue 38 Jul 30-Aug 5, 2003 This is an excerpt, for the entire column go to: http://www.citybeat.com/current/musicspillit.shtml Spill It, by Mike Breen It's Queen City Blues Fest time again. The festival returns this weekend to Sawyer Point, along the banks of the Ohio River. Presented by the Greater Cincinnati Blues Society, this year's event features renowned national headliners like Bobby Rush, Junior Watson and acoustic Blues phenom Rory Block on Friday, and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, The Campbell Brothers and the Blind Boys of Mississippi on Saturday. Local artists participating include Them Bones (who kick off the event at 5:30 on Friday), Ricky Nye, Big Joe Duskin, Sweet Alice Hoskins & Unfinished Business and the Blues Society's "Blues Challenge" competition winners, Dick and the Roadmasters. Attention to detail is part of what makes the QCBF one of the best events of its kind in the country, with a plethora of side stages and workshops. If you tire of the abundance of six-stringers, the popular Arches Piano Stage is back this year, highlighting Nye, Duskin, Todd Hepburn and many more ivory ticklers on Saturday. That stage is dubbed the Arches Acoustic Stage on Friday, with acts like Block, Catfish Keith and Rishell & Raines. Lift your spirits both nights at the Gospel Stage, with a solid line-up of choirs and other acts. And, for the curious and musically inclined, the Arches stage will have workshops on Cincinnati Blues history, piano, acoustic guitar and harmonica, hosted by local historian Frank Lynch and various fest performers, starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Admission to the festival is $3 for Friday, and $3 for Saturday before 6 p.m. (it's $5 after 6 p.m. on Saturday). Two-day passes are also available for $5. For more info, call 513-684-GCBS or go to the GCBS' excellent new Web site ( cincyblues.org ), which has the full schedule rundown. Congress declared 2003 the "Year of the Blues," and we can't think of a better way to celebrate. The city's Blues venues will be abuzz all weekend as well, with festival performers and attendees eager to keep the fun going after hours. Jazzmania in Covington, which is leaning towards an all-Blues format these days, presents the RJ Mischo Band on Thursday, the Junior Watson Band on Friday and the Darrell Nulisch Band on Saturday. And you can catch Them Bones at Middletown's Madison Inn on Friday and Saturday, as well as at their weekly Sunday night open jam session (which should be especially lively this week) at Mansion Hill Tavern in Northern Kentucky. ++ psychodots ++ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2003 10:52:18 -0400 From: "stevec" Subject: RE: Psycho Depot Issue 357 <>> Two of the 'Dots biggest Louisville fans, Steve and Leslie Coomes, will be there!
