Hey All! Man, I'm going to have to get on the "dailies" depot list! That last digest flurry took quite some time to get through. All good, too, but I have to voice something here. One little chunk of that last digest read as follows... Date: Mon, 7 Jul 2003 22:11:02 -0400 From: Jeffrey A Burroway Subject: rob fetters: addressing the depot On Monday, June 10, 2003, KMcKeehan@woh.rr.com wrote: > Way to go Jim and Scooob....we got new songs from the depot gripes! > Even mentioned he had seen the gripes about "the 'dots greatest hits shows" rob fetters, 6/6/2003 @ canal street tavern, dayton, oh i did something i never do...i went to the psycho-depot...somebody sent me something and it led to the psycho-depot and i saw all these complaints about the psychodots playing 'the greatest hits'...'what about the days i remember the days when rob had the lyrics hanging on his mic stand because it was a new song...in a blizzard'...or some such... Okay.... I can't speak for Dave (aka Scooob), and I certainly mean no disrespect to anyone who posted regarding all of this, but I never posted my two cents for it to be construed as a complaint. I posted it because I thought that in the slimmest of chances that anyone in the band might actually read it, it might serve as fodder for reconsideration of what they perceive to be the general consensus: "We only want the HITS!!" There's no doubt in my mind that some may walk away from a show of "hits" completely satisfied everytime the band favors us with a performance from now until the second coming, and I value every opportunity to see those guys have at it. But if that consensus is the sole basis with which they prepare for another performance, and it's not a TRUE consensus of a fair representation of those of us standing in front of them when they're performing, then maybe it would behoove them to know that. Not a complaint, just a sharing of information. I can't tell you how disappointed I am right now that I have NO chance of attending the Indy show in a few weeks, due to my work schedule. And in light of missing Rob's performance at Canal Street for the very same reason, and the fact that he pulled out the stops and shared new music (due to or not due to depot posts of mine or Dave's, or whomever's), and the possibility of that very thing happening in Indy and my not being able to be there to share in the potential fresh new musical treats that may be shared that evening, I'm really bumming. But life goes on... If it happens, it happens and when I'm not in attendance, I'll be glad that many of you will be. And maybe you'll get yet an[other] opportunity to see a classic being born, as I've been so fortunate to have done so many times in the past. Whomever tricked Rob into reading the aforementioned post, feel free to repeat your efforts. This isn't important information, but he may get a clearer understanding of what I was trying to say, and that IS important to me. Holy shit, my soapbox just collapsed.... ++ psychodots ++ Date: Thu, 10 Jul 2003 08:45:05 -0400 From: Mary Bosken Subject: Blue Birds City Beat Vol 9, Issue 35 Jul 9-Jul 15, 2003 Spill It by Mike Breen Below is an excerpt, for the entire column go to: http://www.citybeat.com/current/musicspillit.shtml The Pleasant Ridge community's Ridge Day celebration takes place Saturday at the Pleasant Ridge Rec Center starting at noon. I have Terrry's wondermous pix from JOM on the dots website now, along with all the info I have about the INDY show. Also posted is the bucket CD cover, and soon there will be all the info about how to buy this thing. Within the week, we'll also have nice pix of the last Arduser solo CD. I'm not going to preach on MP3s, but IMHO, at a certain point, I *DO* own a song. I mean, for "Dark side of the Moon", do we really have to pay for it on "the next big medium", after we've bought it on LP (twice), 8-track, and CD? I don't think so. OTOH, I don't really think you should posess a copy of the song if you haven't bought it AND IT IS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE. Somewhere in my archives I have a copy of Porkopolis recorded from the board at MachineGun Kellys. One day I'll convert it to CD and MP3. Do I feel bad about having it? No. Do I feel like I'm stealing? No. If it was released would I buy it? Hell yeah. Since I've bought everything the dots, raisins, and bears ever recorded, I don't feel bad about any copying of MP3s that I either own or are not commercially available. As I've said before, whatever they put out, I'll buy. All of that being said, I'm not really going to share my stuff wih anyone else that hasn't bought everything. I'll let someone listen to an MP3 to whet their appetite, but if the stuff is available, you should buy it. The solo acoustic MP3 I have of "Dave" is, IMHO, even better than the studio recording of it. It's in the top 5 on my iTunes playlist. That being said, I'm not going to share it with people that haven't bought the original...and not even with those that have. OTOH, I think it is our duty to download every Metallica song there is, just to piss them off. BTW, I asked Rob about the MP3 page at the beginning (along with Mr. Ash), and Rob had mixed feelings, but wanted some songs to be made available. Some songs were, at the request of the authors, pulled. FWIW, lately I've been listening to 1) Johnny Cash, 2) Robert Johnson, and 3) Traditional Hawi'ian folk music. Lots of 7 chords. As far as what Mr. Ash said about Rob's lyrics, I like it. I don't know for certain, but I have a feeling that Rob feels the same way about religion that I do: it is a deeply personal thing. The idea of trying to convert people irks me at my core, but if you ask me what I think, I'll tell you. There is a great unknown when dealing with these matters, beyond my paltry understanding. The song "Dear God" by XTC poses some of these questions rather pointedly: "did you make disease, and the diamond blue?" What kind of an entity would create children and mountains and oceans and AIDS and cancer and leukemia? Well, I certainly don't have those answers, but I'll tell you how I have best resolved this in my mind. I've rambled too long. Thanks for the new lyrics and stuffs!
