Thanks, Jeff, and what an amazing memory you have (nudge nudge wink wink)! Trailer Park Bob sounds like a Fetters classic, but the words that really intrigued me are Idiot In The Sky. The lyrics seem to expose a new side to Rob's metaphysical outlook. I've been curious for quite awhile about Mr. Fetters' spiritual views. Not that Rob's personal beliefs are any of my business, but he does choose to write about them in quite a few songs. I'm of the heathen/agnostic/secular humanist persuasion personally, one who is usually dismissive of public proclamations of personal religious faith. To each his own, says I, but spare us any proselytizing. But Rob's lyrics never preach, just explore one interesting aspect or another of spirituality. And since he's such an irreverent, and occasionally, dare I say, impetuous kind of guy, I've always found it a smidgen tantalizing that alongside that part of his personality sits a strong core belief in a higher power. Something that's central enough to his makeup to seep into his art fairly regularly. Frankly it's helped me to gain some respect for the power of faith, when applied in a non-hypocritical, non-judgmental kinda way. So imagine my surprise to read the "Idiot" lyrics, in which the narrator proclaims God to be emotionally retarded. This may not reflect directly on Rob's own views, and may be a character study that occurred to him in reaction to the self-blame issue he referred to when introducing the song. Nevertheless, he places himself next to the self-blamer, praying earnestly even while he's aware of the futility of calling on a vengeful god. That's the part I found intriguing: the suggestion that faith has value even to someone who can't fathom how a just god could allow so much ugliness to transpire under his watch. I'll be rolling that one around in my head for awhile. Just wish I could actually hear the song! Any other reactions / interpretations? In most Internet forums I'd be afraid to raise these kinds of issues for fear of starting a religious debate, but we're all friends here in Depot-land and things very rarely sink to a negative personal level. On a completely unrelated matter: just want to throw my 2 cents in on Rob's comments on music downloads as theft. The full quote was "I think that somebody taking what I've made, that I mean to sell, someone taking that for free is just that, it is theft." A key part of his quote I think was the "that I mean to sell" part. Wouldn't most of us agree that downloading songs that are commercially available to avoid paying for them is an ethically-challenged activity? But that's way different than downloading rarities and live cuts as a supplement to already buying everything an artist has to sell. I know Rob has mixed feelings about show-taping and trading, but he's allowed the mp3 page on psychodots.com to exist, so he must be somewhat okay with the non-commercial stuff being downloadable. As the creator of many of those mp3 files, I don't want to sound defensive here, but because of the briefness of Rob's quote and its context in the Channel 9 piece, it would be pretty easy to make the leap that Fetters is opposed to all Internet song downloading. I don't think that's the case.
