The Bears - Adrian Belew, Rob Fetters, Bob Nyswonger and Chris Arduser - continue their rebirth wit this 14-song document of the band's reunion tour in February ("Figure It Out" was recorded at their Southgate House show). For the album, the band has bravely gone the "rock verite" route, not cleaning up vocal and guitar parts. Most live albums go through more post-production nips and tucks than Cher. Seven songs come from the band's recent album, Car Caught Fire, while four come from their 1986 debut and three more from the follow-up, Rise and Shine. But the group's great songwriting (all four write) and love of Beatle-esque pop (with touches of '70s prog) make Live a seamless, timeless whole. Mr. Fetters owns the CD's two standout cuts, the poignant "Dave," about a friend's suicide, and the fiery pop-rocker "Under the Volcano," a hit song in everything but sales figures. There are delightful touches throughout the nearly hour-long disc. The album opens with the good-timey rocker "Honeybee," before heading into Mr. Arduser's "What's the Good of Knowing." For guitar freaks, it's "Success," a mix of intricately herky-jerky dual guitars and blazing solos. In true Bears style, the jaw-dropping virtuosity is tempered by goofy group vocals. Those sort of surprises continue with "Little Blue River," as the high-octane electric guitars are replaced by a chiming mandolin, sweet harmonies and jaunty coda recalling Paul Simon's "Cecelia." There are occasional bum notes, most noticeable on vocals, but it doesn't detract from the simple fact - this is one great band. So while a close listen reveals some minor flaws, it also shows world-class musicians having a great time and pushing each other a bit further than they'd go on their own. The Bears play Canal Street Tavern in Dayton on Thursday and Southgate House on Oct. 5. Live can be purchased at local independent record stores and online: www.thebearsmusic ++ psyhodots ++ Date: Friday, September 13, 2002 1:20 PM From: nnerviews@yahool.com Subject: How to buy new Bluebirds CD?
