The new CD! I will be making the almost automatic trek from Indianapolis to Cincinnati to see the Graveblankents show tommorrow night. Does anyone know whether or not they will have the new bootleg psychodots disc? If not, can anyone point me to a store, near to, or on the way to the Barrel House where I could pick it up. I am not real familiar with Cinci, but can get around the main roads. We will be probably coming I-74 to I-275E, then I-75. So I will be going by Forest Fair if there is any place there. (To the why are you going that way questions, we are going to Burbank's to eat. Yum!) Thanks for the info! Here's a great 'Dot article and nominations for the upcoming 1998 Cincinnati Entertainment Awards. Mary City Beat October 1-7, 1998 Spill It, by Mike Breen (pages 27 and 28) The 'Dots Live One of Cincinnati music fans' favorite groups, psychodots, has some new music available, coming close to two years after the group's "breakup" (the band continues to perform together occasionally). In the tradition of the final multi-cassette releases from The Raisins - which, in case you've been living under a rock, is an earlier incarnation of the 'dots - that were released at that band's final show at Bogart's all those years ago, Official Bootleg represents the full spectrum of psychodots' history. But unlike the Raisins' collection, which consisted of out-takes, rarities and live tracks, Bootleg represents the 'dots during their last "official" gig at Ripley's on Nov. 8 back in 1996. Not only does the album present music from the band's entire tenure, it also offers tracks like "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" and "History" from guitarist Rob Fetters' '97 solo effort and "Rabbit Manor," one of bassist Bob Nyswonger's song contributions to The Bears. The album does an excellent job of featuring songs from each 'dot member, since all three, including drummer Chris Arduser, are compelling songwriters. The recording initially came about when the fan who recorded it approached the group about releasing it to other fans. The group and its management liked the idea and decided to give it an official stamp of approval, putting it out on their label, Strugglebaby. All things considered, the recording quality is pretty solid and, for those computer literate, the discs are enhanced with still photos and the video for the song "Mattress." The album serves as a testament to the group's collective songwriting gifts and energetic live presence. Official Bootleg is available at several local record retailers or you can write Hal Bernard Enterprises, Inc., 2612 Erie Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45208. City Beat October 1-7, 1998 1998 Cincinnati Entertainment Awards Nominating Guide (excerpts) Folk Category Adult Alternative/Contemporary The Graveblankets - Former psychodot drummer Chris Arduser has stepped to the front in this group, which released the incredibly memorable Apple Plum Blood Pudding, an album full of hook-laden Pop and organic instrumentation. Rock Category Rob Fetters - This singer/songwriter was inducted into the CEA Hall of Fame last year as a member of The Bears. His latest CD, Lefty Loose, Right Tight, ranks as some of the best regional Pop Rock released this decade. Critical Achievement Awards (Nominating Committee votes on this category) Album of the Year Rob Fetters - LL, RT Now the tricky part, you MUST pick up a City Beat ballot, complete it with your signature and mail it in by Oct. 31, 1998. No email votes this time. Make sure you get your ballot in! PAUL ++ psychodots ++ Date: Fri, 2 Oct 1998 09:12:06 EDT From: Artichoke6@aol.com Subject: Official review of Bootleg Cincinnati Enquirer Friday, October 2, 1998 Weekend Magazine DISC 'N' DAT (page 38) Psychodots loud and live, review by Larry Nager 1996 Ripley's CD shows just how good beloved power-pop trio was Psychodots Official Bootleg Stugglebaby: 3 and a half stars (3 is good, 4 is excellent) $25 CDs; no cassettes "We're just going to play a gig and try to play most of the notes as close to correctly as we can remember," Rob Fetters said a few days before the psychodots show captured on this new two-CD set. In the tradition of the Raisins' Everything and More, Official Bootleg provides post-breakup solace for the 'dots' many fans. Subtitled Ripley's Live, November 8, 1996, the set captures the late lamented trio blowing out the doors one more time (the band played its final show eight days later in Dayton, OH.) The group has occasionally reunited, notably in March at the 1998 Cammy Awards. But even as singer/guitarist Mr. Fetters does solo projects and singer/bassist Bob Nyswonger and singer/drummer Chris Arduser do their Graveblankets thing, the 'dots are missed. It's rare to find so much songwriting talent in one band. For almost 20 years, the Fetters/Nyswonger team has practically defined the term, "clever, well-crafted pop songs" in Greater Cincinnati. Mr. Arduser is no slouch, but his best writing has been in the 'blankets. He's heard to fine effect in his galloping "Six Feet Deep." The 'dots, like its predecessor the Raisins, was a band with too much and too varied talent. Major labels prefer simple acts making simple statements. With so many lead singers and songwriters, the 'dots were doomed to be local heroes. But heroes they remain, and Official Bootleg is a bittersweet reminder of just how good they were.
