Brian Lovely, the Graveblankets, Rob (solo), then the 'dots. Just when things couldn't get any better, a Raisin reunion! Bucket concluded the evening. Wow, again! Shawn has a "real" job??? ++ psychodots ++ Date: Sat, 21 Mar 1998 17:56:43 EST From: Beanebrew Subject: Friday @ the 'gate If you missed last night's show at Southgate House, you may as well swan-dive off the ol' Suspension Bridge and scream "Stick a fork in me!!!" on the way down. Anyway, it was an evening of pure enjoyment, beginning with the always tantalizing musical stylings of Mr. Brian Lovely, who was joined by Christian James near the end of his set (c'mon Chris, "Pop a Wheelie"!!). The night progressed with the Graveblankets featuring the ever-amazing George Cunningham (for which the night hopefully earned medical expense-relief). Queenie (aka Rob) played an excellent set, later joined by his 'dot-mates, and Bridgett. Then an incredible thing happened... Our musical heros from the late 70s/early 80s, the raisins, took the stage. This was something I never dreamed I would see again in my lifetime. (This is not to slight the last incarnation of said group, I loved them, too, and saw many a show with Rob, Bob, Tom and Chris WWWAAAAAYYYYY back when). But I must say, the image of Rob Fetters, Bob Nyswonger, Bam Powell and Rick Neiheisel onstage together with their instruments, performing and smiling at one-another and kicking our ASSES in the meantime.... well, what can I say. If you were there on those Monday nights at Cooters, you know what I'm talking about. I was compelled to share the event with one of my best friends, who, oddly enough, did not make this show. She lives in Colorado and the only way to share was to call on the ol' cell phone and let her listen in. She enjoyed it every bit as much as the rest of us. Rob even acknowledged her when Bridgett later questioned why I was holding up my phone. (Wish she had heard that, too!) Okay, I'm rambling.... The evening wrapped up with the Buckets, and a very enjoyable performance it was. Am I the only one who wants to hit the life-rewind button and do this over again?? I don't think so. And if you missed it........ sorry.......(:>{P ++ psychodots ++ Date: Sat, 21 Mar 1998 18:49:17 EST From: Jamester5 Subject: Southgate benefit As far as I'm concerned, I am the luckiest person in the world and so are the other friends, acquaintances, and fans who were at the Southgate House show March 20. I missed the Brian Lovely performance, however, I heard he was amazing. I came in during the Graveblankets and was surprised to see both Bridgett and Laura on stage with the band for several songs (as opposed to swapping). Rob did a great acoustic solo and was joined by Bob and Chris (later by Bridgett) for more acoustic goodies. I was suspicious that a keyboard was placed on stage midway through the performances since none of these bands has a keyboardist. Then I saw Rick Neiheisel lurking about in the crowd. (He drove over from the Red Fish where he played earlier that evening.) I think about everyone's jaws dropped when Bob, Rob, Bam, and Rick walked on stage together. Rob mentioned that Rick asked them all to perform that night and then they started into THE four-song event of my lifetime. (I was still in high school/underage when the raisins played.) For those that were privileged enough to see these guys play "in the Cooter's days", this show was a dream come true. I saw people dancing that I have never seen dance before! Jim Siegert placed a call to Leslie Whited in Colorado and all we could tell her on our end was "Oh, my *%@#$ God!" Wow! To hear the added dimension of a keyboard and a different drum styling with the familiar guitar and bass was incredible! Cincinnati is blessed to have four such talented musicians! The night ended with Bucket (joined by Brian Lovely and Rick Neiheisel). It was a great way to end the best evening ever! ++ psychodots ++ Date: Sun, 22 Mar 1998 11:04:10 EST From: Skought N Subject: Two Scoops!! Esteemed Members, Ya know....it's not a bad night when you get psychodots resurfacing for a short acoustic set, but it was pretty clear Friday night that after the Graveblankets Large Band finished their excellent set at the George Cunningham benefit show (George was in fine form) that something else was in store. There had been some speculation earlier in the evening, but as the stage was being set up for Rob's set, a small stack of keyboards was also set up. Let's see....Rob and Bob are here, Bam Powell was there with Bucket.....knowing that, this clinched it for most folks, that WE WERE GOING TO GET A RAISINS REUNION!! (insert sound of me swallowing my tongue). Really too bad we had to sit through a great set from Rob : c ) One added facet to his solo set was that as I was sitting upstairs soaking it up, there was Bob sitting a couple seats over, by himself, pressed against the railing, giving rapt attention to Rob. All the years these guys have been together and they obviously still have great respect for one another. It was one GREAT night of music (thanks to Lee Rolfes!), and no amount of me pecking at this keyboard can do it justice, but with apologies to Brian Lovely (what can't this guy do?), The Graveblankets, and Bucket, here's a hefty slice of Friday night's cake: Rob getting set up, speaking to the mixer: Can you, uh, put something on the...the guitar and the voice to make them sound wonderful? Rob's set - (Lee introduces Rob) Rob: Thank you and good night. Hi everybody. It's a love-fest of musicians here. I don't have much of a game plan here, except I'm gonna play a few songs, then I'm gonna bring out some musical friends.....completely, utterly, unrehearsed. I've played a few solo gigs around. So far I've done like 1 solo gig in Nashville, where people were quiet, and listened and I was so frightened of that effect that it was useless.....I'm gonna do some stuff that......I'm just gonna start off by playing a song that I don't think any of you have ever heard, unless you live in my house....or you're a Bear....... song - "As you are I once was, as I am you will be....." (title?) Rob: Thanks. Here's a song I wrote about a…I think I wrote this just on the other side of a traumatic part of my life....the trauma of experiencing life as an adult, with the emotions of a 12 year old, in reality for the first time. It's a bad scene. song: Help Yourself Rob: Thank you...I'm only doing sad songs tonight. Songs to make you cry....As you know I've sold my soul to advertising and I do commercial music now, to feed the fam(ily)....often it's really fun. I like....I enjoy selling my soul....as long as somebody's willing to by it….but sometimes it's truly awful. I've met some amazing humans, but I find that sometimes the more awful a human is, the more inspirational that human is....and when I allow myself to be spiritually defeated, and actually grow to hate and detest a person, they usually get a song! (Rob responds to something from the crowd) No, I wasn't pissed off. My feelings were hurt. song: Try Rob: Bitch!........Thank you. (while he's playing the guitar intro) - This is a sing along......so sing along. song: History Rob: Thank you.....I'd like to thank Strummy (George) for going to such extreeeme measures to give us an excuse to do this.....Well, since you're such great listeners I'm gonna try this song that.....it's another, uh....I think it's gonna…I KNOW it's gonna be on the new Bears record. It's about a friend of mine named Dave. Dave Gauchey (sp?).....went to high school together. That was up to our sophomore year together. song: Dave (the audience dove into the pause before the last verse with premature applause, causing Rob to shake his head) Rob: Dave.....here's a song about Grace and Noah...and Sam and Robert song: Joy And Madness Rob: Thank you....ok, EXTRA BAND MEMBER ALERT! (to the band members) Stop your drinkin'...finish shooting up, or whatever....oh, you think it's funny! (Chris and Bob join Rob, acoustically) Deathy doesn't know it, but I'm going to play his guitar....(getting levels set, Rob speaks to Chris/the audience) It's fine. I want to hear every note you play, Deathy. After all, you're a "folk instrumentalist" now (a reference to one a Chris' Cammy nominations). Chris: Oh, yeah. Rob: It starts in C, and then it goes to F, G, and then it goes to D....These are psychodots. Now we're psychodots, ok? Just for the record. (crowd bellows) That's the response we enjoy. song: Everything 's Gonna Be Alright (.....we'll be shootin' dope with Jesus in a field of clover...) Chris: Hey Bridget, if you want to sing on this one, get over here. Rob: After all, it's a love-fest. (Bridget Otto joins from the opposite side of the stage where Chris can't see her) Chris: Bridget Otto, do you hear your name? Bridget: Why, thank ya boys. Chris: Oh, there you go.... (someone in the crowd yells out "This is great!") Chris: Can't wait to get some schnitzel after the gig. Rob: Can I get just a little more guitar in my monitor….'cause I have a huge ego, and I just gotta hear me, me, me, so... Bridget: Who is Jim (Siegert) talking to....on the phone? crowd: Leslie! Rob: Leslie Whited!....Colorado is in the house tonight! song: Open Window song: Another Reminder (Bridget exits) Chris: Thanks Bridget. song: Exaggeration Chris: Thank you!.....We're done for now. More insanity will ensue. Bob: It's too early to go, so keep drinkin' and keep puttin' money in the green bucket, you know, for ol' Georgie. (psychodots exit. Shortly, THE RAISINS ARE ON STAGE SETTING UP!) Lee Rolfes: Hey, before we get this next little garage band thing going on here....(goes into an advert for the various CDs available, thanks the crew, etc.) Bam: Who was that? That was Lee Rolfes. He kinda put this whole thing together, man. He's been down here just all day....all day frettin'....frettin' and worryin'..... (while they continue to make adjustments, a female voice can be heard quitely going "oh my god...oh my god...oh my god...") (there are scattered requests from the crowd) Bam (?):Yehaw! Rob: Mr. Soundman just turn everything up really, really loud….I just want to explain a little...our rehearsal consisted of a phone cal from Ricky Nye sayin', you know, "Hey, waddayousay?"....that's how he got me... song: Miserable World (a note - ok, how many other people got chills up/down their spines when the song started?....wait a minute, let me rephrase that.....who DIDN'T?) Bam: Hey, Mr. Soundman, can I have a little bit o' Bob in my monitor, over here....just the bass part, you know, 'cause I wanna be a bassman too, BA BA BA BOW BA BOW! Rob: You gotta get Bob! He's playin' baaad tonight!...Well, we're loose! song: Movin' Again Rob: Just like the record. Ricky: Thank you very much! (various requests for "Willing Accomplice" from the crowd, Bam starts the cymbal rhythm) Bob (to everybody concerned): Hey! Don't do that, now. Come on, guys. I had that lobe steam-cleaned a long time ago, and it is shiny and smooth. song: The Bends Rob: Ok, well, we're gonna do 1 more. We....We're gonna LEARN these songs, and we'll do this again. We'll do it right....but this is right. Bam: It's right because we can't hear each other....we can't hear each other, and we don't remember the songs....and that makes it even righter (rim shot/cymbal) Rob:...and we don't really care, like the old days!....You know, if only I'd invested that jar of quarters in the stock market.....god dammit! How was I to know?! (Rob starts strummin' "Quarters") Ricky: Come on now! Rob: You gotta stick around too, 'cause I think everyone is gonna play.... song: Quarters Ricky (?): Oi! (?) Rob: Boy! Bob: Hey, thanks a lot. (the gents huddle on stage while the crowd goes nuts, but come up empty) Rob: We can't think of anything else that we remember, to play, so.... Bob: We wanna thank Rob for playin' a few songs with us. That was fun. We're gonna stay up here and play with Bucket a little bit. Ricky (to the crowd): You know what, The Raisins was all about you guys. 'mgonna cry! (the crowd, drained, has a cigarette) I don't think I've ever seen a crowd as happy, and sooo into a performance, as the folks at Southgate House were Friday night, during that Raisins set. Man.....
