Recommended Doctors
This page is dedicated to informing people of other people's opinions good or bad about their local doctors. Some could be personality problems and not at all the problem with the doctors education, other's might be miss understandings. Take all with a grain of salt. Different people react differently to different doctors. A friend of mine loves her doctor, and i hated him. But it's a good place to start if you see one in your area. PLEASE, send me more information on doctors, i would love everyone to have a great doctor they can talk to! Remember a doctor that will tell you they are ignorant of Narcolepsy but is willing to learn, is better than one that knows (or thinks they know) everything but is unwilling to listen! I will call the list of doctors i have in January of each year to make sure they are still valid. If you posted to Brian's web site and i didn't get a return email from you i will cut out your name and email but will use the quote and doctor information if the doctor information is correct. Those of you who did reply, thank you. If you don't see a doctor in your area go to http://www.talkaboutsleep.com and click on the information tab, then select Directories. You will then have a choice of American Academy of Sleep Medicine, American Board of Sleep Medicine, and World Federation of Sleep Research Societies.
Got a great Doc you want others to know about so they don't have to go through hell trying to find one?
Or do you have a horrible experience with a Doctor that you want others to know before they find out the hard way?
First, tell me if you want your e-mail address on it or not, I won't put it there if you don't explicitly tell me you want it there. Also, if you give me bad info on a doc, don't be afraid, after it's posted, even the CIA couldn't get the name of the person who sent it to me. I have Narcoleptic memory, I don't remember what I had for breakfast! Second, the original is deleted, then written over by ones or zeros when I de-fragment my hard drive each day.
Here's how it goes:

Arkansas
With permission, my sleep doc is Paul Wylie, M.D. Little Rock, AR He is a sleep specialist. Not only is he willing to listen to all I bring him from this list and my local support group, he's willing to act upon it. if he left town i believe i'd travel the distance to keep appointments with him..he's very encouraging and understanding to the ups and downs and sideways turns N gives his patients.
hey guy....i'd like to add my family doc to the doc page because bless his heart...he diagnosed me with no sleep study, he listened to my complaint, my experiences over the previous few months and pronounced Narcolepsy to my ears for the first time ever...and he was wise enough and caring enough to send me to the most wonderful sleep doc ever! (okay, just my opinion....!) but my family doc is:

California
I have been fighting sleep problems for years, even during my 20 years in the
USAF.
They got progressively worse but no one could ever come up with a correct
diagnosis. Dr. Yelamanchili set me up with a sleep study at Loma Linda hospital
sleep center that confirmed Sleep Apnea ( I now use a Bi Pap machine). He then
set me up for two more sleep studies at two different hospitals and determined
that I also have narcolepsy and PLMS.
Dr Yelamanchili has been chief of staff for two years at St Marys Hospital in Apple Valley Ca. He is not only a great and caring doctor but he is interested in anything new that comes up on the internet concerning sleep problems. He is a real professional who has devoted many hours to sleep studies.

"Hi--I would like to give you the names of two fantastic doctors here in
Sacramento, California. The first is the neurologist who diagnosed me
with narcolepsy/cataplexy, and the second is my sleep specialist.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First, the neurologist: Dr. David Dozier--he immediately understood
from my descriptions of sudden muscle weakness that I was suffering from
cataplexy. He spent over an hour with me, interviewing me about my
symptoms, and ruling out epilepsy. He was very compassionate and
understanding. This man knows narcolepsy!" ... Liz Billeci

Of course we can't forget the wonderful doctors and researchers of UCLA and Stanford University that also see patients! I could not find a direct contact information to UCLA Sleep center, i know they research there, perhaps they do not see people as patients? I have met both Dr. Seigel of UCLA and Dr. Mignot of Stanford, and they both have wonderful personalities and a true heart and understanding for those of us with Narcolepsy!

Dr. Richard Harrison-Atlas
Family Practice
Blue Hills Family Medicine
675 Tower Ave, Ste. 401, Hartford CT
(860) 242-2048
I began at this practice seeing a female dr., I saw Dr. Harrison-Atlas
because my other dr. was not available. After that visit I switched. He listens
and really cares. I have had very few dr's. call to check on me in my life time
and that impresses me the most. He has an excellent bedside manner. He worked
with me and did not seem to mind my (for lack of better way to say this)telling
him what I wanted him to do for me.

Dr. Gary Belt

2nd office: 281 Hartford Turnpike, Ste. 104, Vernon, CT
(860) 243-9709 or (860) 872-2762
Dr. Belt was highly recommended to me, he previously worked in the sleep lab
at Mt. Sinia Hospital which is now affiliated with Saint Francis Hospital. He
gave me a thorough exam. I will be having an MRI in a couple of weeks, mainly
because I don't fit the "norm" for N. I had no real symptoms prior to
onset, the N just "hit" me, all of the sudden one day I came home from
work and I was exhausted (thought I had mono) stayed home for a week and slept.
My age did not fit the "norm" either. Basically he feels the test will
be normal but wants to make sure. This impressed me because so many dr's. are
penny conscious.
Idaho
Steve L. Schneider MD

Boise, Idaho 83703
(208) 344-7799
This man is aware of Narcolepsy. For instance, he told me that there were PWN's on the Internet and I should go find them. He will refer you to a specialist for diagnosis and then make decisions about the types of medications and dosage etc. He is flexible and interested.
As of May 2003 is accepting no new patients. Might be worth a try though, ya never know.
The doctor not to see is :
Dr. Michael Boykin
338 6th street
Lewiston, ID 83501
(208) 746 3320
He is a neurologist but doesn't know that much about narcolepsy and gets
intimidated if you know more then he does. He will accuse you of being a drug
addict for your knowledge.
>> Note from Kristy<< I would like to mention, this (accusing of being a drug addict) is one of the most common problems with medical personnel encountered by PWN seeking diagnosis, sometimes even after diagnosis.

My son used to go to Dr. Boris Vern at the
University of Illinois at Chicago Hospital. He is very good and has
participated in research on N. The address is 912 S. Wood and the phone
number is 312-355-3060. I got his name through the Center for Narcolepsy
Research which is also located near the hospital. The reason why I say my
son used to go to Dr. Vern is that he has since moved to Alexandria, Va.
Dr. Vern was nice enough, and knowledgeable enough of other physicians, to
recommend a physician in Va. to my son. If you have any other questions
please feel free to contact me privately - just put an N in the subject.

I have a sleep doc for your site. His name is Daniel Rifkin and he practices at the Sleep Disorder Center at Millard Fillmore Hospital Gates Circle Buffalo, NY Phone: 716-887-5337. He did his Neurology residency at the University of Rochester, NY and a Fellowship in Sleep Disorders, @ University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. At U. of MI his mentor was Michael Aldridge MD, Director UMI Sleep Disorders Center & author of numerous publications (& research) on narcolepsy & idiopathic hypersomnia.
Dr. Rifkin was the lst physician to see my daughter as a whole person and address the fact that her sleeping disorder affected more than just sleeping patterns. He spoke directly to her and not only asked questions, but listened to the answers. She came to him with a dx of idiopathic hypersomnia (which previous MDs were content with) and was determined to rule out any other conditions that could be causing her problems BEFORE he labeled her IH at the age of 15.
Being a RN myself, I was quite pleased to see how up-to-date he was on the research in his field and even more pleased to discover how highly regarded he is by the other members of the team at the sleep center.

Dr. Stephen M. Newman
Island Neurological Associates
824 Old Country Road
Plainview, NY 11893
(516) 822-2230
After my first full-body cataplectic attack, I contacted my OB, thinking that this attack might be related to the epidural I had during delivery ten months earlier. I was very fortunate that my OB referred me to a neurologist.
Dr. Newman was very thorough in my first visit, asking me about daytime sleepiness, sleep paralysis, hallucinations and vivid dreams. He diagnosed my narcolepsy that day, and started me on meds. (I was working a very stressful job at the time, supporting my husband through grad school, so I had to be able to function as well as possible.) He ordered a general physical, an EEG and an MRI to rule out any other possible causes of my symptoms. Well, meds didn't work well enough, so 8 mos. later, Dr. Newman sent me for a sleep study. This confirmed my narcolepsy.
I have now been a patient of Dr. Newman's for ten years. He is very
knowledgeable about narcolepsy, keeps up on developments, etc. He saw me through
my SSA disability claim, the fight to keep my driver's license, and the
difficulties of having and caring for my children. He has been very supportive
and encouraging, a good listener, and has given me great advice throughout these
ten years. And he even returns phone calls!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was recently re-diagnosed with N after years of ignoring it (started at age
16, I'm 40 and too tired to fight it anymore!). I was very hesitant to seek
treatment because of the fairly mild case I have, and the very good response I
had to dexadrine 12 years ago... "unh huh, so you want some SPEED Mrs. (id
deleted).? Let me refer you to Narc-Anon ..."
Well, Dr. Donald Greenblatt
2110 S. Clinton Ave,
Rochester, NY 14611
716-442-4141
..is one of the kindest, most thoughtful and empathic doctors I have ever met.
He carefully evaluated my history, current symptoms, previous diagnosis (before
MSLT was common), listened to the reasons I'm now seeking treatment, compared
these with the inconclusive MSLT, and recommended treatment (that is working -
ta da!).
He works at a sleep center that is fully accredited; his training is in
pulmonology; his office staff is superb; he actually gave up his free morning to
schedule my consultation; he is very easy to talk to.
North Carolina
I just found your web site and wanted to send you my docs information.
United Sleep Medicine, L. L. C.
Dr. Stephen C. Hardy, M.D., Ph.D
Medical Director
Neurologist
1900 Randolph Road, Suite 112
Charlotte, North Carolina 28207
(704) 377-5337
I was head injured in a wreck in 94. Not being able to stay awake during
rehab, I was sent by Dr. Hardy to get a sleep test. The rest is history. I was
diagnosed with severe Narcolepsy, cataplexy, and rls. My eyes do not close when
I sleep either. Glad to hear that I'm not the only one. It is very painful at
times. I take provigil (400), dexidrine(60-100), and prozac right now.
My only point is that this doctor was able to look through the symptoms of an
obvious head injury and see that there was something else going on. He gave me
my life back and I am forever grateful to him. He allows me to control my meds
realizing that some days are worse than others and thus I may have to boost the
provigil with dexidrine more on one day and less on another. He listens to my
needs and never makes me feel intimidated. He is the most compassionate doctor
that I have ever known and is at the forefront of educating the public on sleep
disorders in this area. He runs commercials on television and has a very large
sleep clinic.
Ohio
Dr. Jose C. Refecas
150 Springside Drive
Arkon,Ohio 44333
1-330-376-1902
I have been seeing this Dr. for about 4 yrs. now. I have sleep apnea. That's how this whole thing started with me. I have PLM (Periodic limb movements) EDS (Excessive Daytime Sleepiness). I am also PWN (PersonWith Narcolepsy). I feel as though this Dr. treats me just like a number and really doesn't go into great detail as to my problems and WHAT about them. He says "It just doesn't get any better". What a comment to someone that really doesn't understand, or should I say forgets just what I am told. I wanted to change Dr.'s but he knows all my history and I was told he was the best in this field here in the town of Akron. I am now taking 1/2 a pill of provigil for 2 weeks and have stopped ritalin. This was done over the phone. I almost crashed at the wheel again, and called him, this is what I was told to now take. I will take a whole provigil pill 200 mg this coming week.
It seems to have helped me with function better. I won't see Dr. Rafecas till the end of this month. I am a single Mom with a 17 yr. old son.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Add Dr. James A. Ewry (Toledo, Ohio area) to your list. He's a G.P., but has been absolutely wonderful with my adult daughter and me with our Narcolepsy. We both received diagnoses from Sleep Specialists a number of years ago, but Dr. Ewry has been wonderful about managing our meds and changes there to, mailing us our scripts for Dexadrine, Ritalin or whatever. He treats four generations of my family (only my daughter and I for Narcolepsy) including my 89 year-old father, myself, my adult children and grandchildren. His wonderful sense of humor keeps us all in stitches, but more than that, his compassion and awareness of this debilitating disorder is indeed a great comfort to we PWN.

Why I like him: He is willing to go through all treatments available
without quitting, until something or some combination is found that will
work for both N and C. (not to mention, he does not fear treating with
xyrem if need be, lol)
My personal suggestion if going to him for treatment:
Be straight with him about how satisfied you are or are not about treatment
and medication adjustments. Report all adverse experiences you may have
with your medications whether they are common or not. Tell him up front
that you don't care how many treatments/adjustments you need to try, you
don't want to stop trying until he has tried every possible therapy out
there and then some, lol. I found that by being straight, insistent and
determined with him, he has gone all the way and beyond and even became more
determined himself to get good results to my satisfaction. I realize I was a
challenge, maybe even aggravating at times, but the challenge alone seemed
to drive him during my course of treatment hell. I like that. If he
doesn't, he's certainly kept his mouth shut about it...but even so, he came
through, lol. Know what you're talking about when it comes to your
discussions with him, and don't be wishy washy or semi satisfied. If you
express some satisfaction to him, but know in your heart you want more, and
you have not tried EVERYTHING, he may stop at that based on your expressed
satisfaction. ;)

He listens. He works with you. He is current on the research. He is *interested*. He has a "clue".
I have also heard positive things about others in Sleep and Chronobiology.
S&C at WPIC is an ASDA accredited sleep center. It is the *only* center in Pittsburgh with ASDA-accredited ability to diagnose Narcolepsy. (The "other" lab is apnea-only. We have a lot of labs in town though! Says something!)
I can disrecommend: Dr. Maria Sunseri (ASDA accredited

horrible staff.

I hope this helps. Ron

Overlake Internal Medicine Associates

Bellevue, Washington 98004

Though diagnosed in 1971 I had been without treatment for many years. A few
years ago I was re diagnosed by Dr. Bonvallet. His office was in Everett, WA
then. Following the overnight plus nap tests this thoughtful and understanding
Doc actually called me on Sunday afternoon to tell me that having read the
studies he felt it important to contact me asap so that I could begin treatment.
When he moved to Bellevue, somehow (probably via contract) my file was left behind with the remaining doctors at his former clinic.
After more than a year of horrendous treatment by the doctors remaining at the Everett clinic I sought after Dr. Bonvallet and was so happy to find him in his new location. He is brilliant, kind, compassionate, and has a wonderful bedside manner. Though he prescribed Modafinal (Provigil), I guess it will be awhile before I can use the prescription. His sleep clinic is highly praised and well known here.
Dr. John C. Vandree who was to continue my treatment at Everett was disinterested and self absorbed. The abuse I received was beyond belief. Month after month Prescription refill requests were not ordered when promised. I would be forced to call repetitively over multiple days, sometimes over more than a week until someone would finally place the order. When I went in for my annual visit I was made to wait 2 1/2 hours in the exam room. When I opened the door to remind the nurse I was waiting she was rude and abusive, demanding I return to the room and close the door. Rather like abusive blackmail, being held hostage so that I could receive the much required annual prescription. I had been taking "Cylert" for a few years at that time. When I asked him about the liver problems associated with it, his response was to ask me if I had experienced any. Now how am I suppose to know that? That was my last visit to the Everett clinic.

Physician: Dr. John Andrews
Specialty: Sleep & Respiratory
Office: Sleep & Respiratory Associates
720 S Van Buren
Green Bay WI 54301

NOTE: I'm not sure if a referral is required for an appointment.
Dr. Andrews has been wonderful! I have never felt the least bit rushed during an
appointment & he always has the time to answer my questions. He has never
failed to call me back when I have called there to talk to him, & he
actually listens to what I have to say! He truly believes that every patient is
different & there is no standard formula for treating an individual with a
sleep disorder. There are several other physicians in the office, & I have
yet to hear anything negative about any of them. The system in the office is
that once a month each doctor has a week that they are on call for the hospital
& sleep lab--no appointments. That has meant that there was never a time
that I had an appointment that I couldn't see the doctor because he had been
called out for whatever. Given the fact that I drive almost 60 miles to see him,
that is important to me. The office staff is wonderful as well. When I'm running
late (which I usually am) & come in with my socks in my hand, my shoes not
tied, & I lay down on the couch & cover my eyes with my socks, they just
laugh & say 'Hi!' I can't say enough good things about Dr. Andrews or my
experiences with the office in general!! Thank you so much Dr. Andrews &
staff--you've all been a godsend!!!!!!!!!!!!
