The Inside Scoop

February 11, 2000

The win last night over Moline completes the regular season and gives Galesburg a 29-2 record heading into next Thursdays regional championship vs. the winner of LaSalle-Peru and Sycamore.

The GHS sophomore team finished their season without the services of starting point guard Annie Parkin. The 5-7 freshman turned an ankle in Tuesdays practice and was not avaliable for last nights game with Moline. The sophomores finish their season at 15-7 and 4-6 in the Western Big 6 conference.

It appears that the IHSA sectional that Galesburg is part of will be moved from LaSalle-Peru to Streator due to a scheduling conflict at LaSalle-Peru High School with music and wrestling. The change in venue does not affect Galesburgs regoinal championship game with the winner of LaSalle-Peru and Sycamore which will be played in Galesburg on Thursday, February 17, 2000.

February 6, 2000

During the 23 point win over #14 ranked Barrington, Galesburg senior Jaque Howard sank five three pointers to become the all-time leader in three point baskets with 158 and counting passing former Streak and current DePaul guard, Molly Watson. Congratulations Jaque!

Galesburg placed four players in double figures in the game against Barrington and was playing without starting senior guard Michelle Flaar, who is currently battling a case of mono. Her playing status is unknown at this time as is backup point guard, Shannon Williams, who has been sidelined by a stress fracture for the past two weeks.

The Streaks complete the regular season and conference season this Thursday at Molines Wharton Field House.

February 4, 2000

The Galesburg win last night coupled with Rock Islands win at Quincy gives Galesburg sole possession of the Western Big 6 championship. Galesburg is currently 8-1, two full games ahead of Quincy (6-3), with one league game remaining, next Thursday at Moline.

The GHS sophomores slowly pulled away in the second half after leading Alleman by one at half. Galesburg built a 12 point lead early in the second quarter only to have Alleman charge back to within one at the half. The Streaks placed three players in double figures while improving to 14-6 and 4-5 in the Western Big 6.

The three freshman playing with Coach Rux on the sophomore team (Amanda Gunther, Lindsey Cooper, and Annie Parkin), are featured in an article in this weeks Zephyr newspaper.

This Saturday, Galesburg faces #14 Barrington in a non conference game at John Thiel Gym. Game time is 1:00 pm for the sophomores and 2:30 varsity.

February 2, 2000

This Thursday is Senior Night and at approximately 7:10, we will honor nine senior varsity letterwinners. This years class is the largest to ever be recognized. While Galesburg Girls Basketball is rich in tradition, these nine girls have helped the Streaks in the last four years to go beyond tradition. During their four years, these Streaks have played 693 games, scored 3578 points, hauled in 1803 rebounds, have gone 119-12, taken 4th in state, made it to the Elite 8, taken 2nd in state, been rated in the top ten in Illinois each year, and been rated #1 in the state two different years.

Pam Bess (manager), Stacey Boettcher, Michelle Flaar, Jaque Howard, Mary Lindstrom, Michelle Mundy, Megan Pacheco, Kimi, Peck, and Whitney Snyder are the seniors who while we are very proud of their basketball accomplishments, we are more proud of how they have played the game and how they have represented our school and community. They represent the best in high school athletics. Thank you seniors!

January 31, 2000

In the win Saturday over Peoria Richwoods, senior Jaque Howard hit three 3-point baskets for her nine points in the game and tied Molly Watson in career three point shots made at 153. Congratulations Jaque!

This week (Thursday), Galesburg will welcome a wagon load of Pioneers as Rock Island Alleman invades John Thiel Gym for a conference matchup.

January 28, 2000

Galesburg used a strong second half to upend the #19 ranked East Moline Panthers last night 65-57. Galesburg placed three players in double figures in Jaque Howard, Megan Pacheco, and Whitney Snyder and went 12-16 at the free throw line to ice away the win.

The sophomores also put three players in double figures but went 22-41 from the free throw line to and could not overcome the UT sophomores. The sophomores are now 12-6.

Tomorrows game at Peoria Richwoods has an 11:00 am tip off for the sophomores and a 12:30 start for the varsity.

January 21, 2000

Thursdays matchup with East Moline has a lot riding on it. East Moline sits at 5-2 in the conference and is looking to gain a share of the conference title should it get past the Streaks. Galesburg is looking to remain on top of the conference and sole possession of first place with a win Thursday. Added inspiration for the Pnathers is rumored that their head coach is expecting her first child on Thursday.

January 21, 2000

The Galesburg win coupled with the Moline win over Quincy last night put Galesburg in sole possession of first place of the Western Big 6. Galesburg is now 6-1 in the conference a game ahead of Quincy and East Moline.

The sophomores moved up to a tie for third place in the conference with the 72-35 win last night. The game also put to rest any doubts anyone had about the championship of the Macomb sophomore tournament. On Monday, Rock Island elected not to play Galesburg in the 3:30 game thus providing the forfeit. The game last night could be construed as the championship game, however, the trophy still sits in Rock Island. Stay tuned.

Sophomore reserve Shannon Williams will miss up to three weeks with a stress fracture in her left foot. The reserve point guard is expected back in time for the playoffs.

January 20, 2000

Rocky II tips off tonight at 6:00/7:30 (soph/vars). In Rocky I, Galesburg took the match 81-48. Since then, Rocky has played impressive basketball and managed to pull down the #4 seed in the upcoming sectional.

January 18, 2000

Galesburg was crowned champion of the Galesburg Martin Luther King Tournament. Here are the final standings for the tournament:
Galesburg (5-0)
Geneseo (4-1)
Peoria Notre Dame (3-2)
Freeport (2-3)
Macomb (1-4)
Dixon (0-5)

Congratulations to the following girls who were selected to the all tournament team:
Marceia Allen - Freeport
Kenisha Collins - Peoria Notre Dame
Jaque Howard - Galesburg
Kelly O'Dell - Geneseo
Sarah Pacheco - Galesburg
Whitney Snyder - Galesburg
Jeanetta Thorpe - Macomb
Shannon Winne - Peoria Notre Dame
Amber Wisdom - Geneseo

Next year's tournament field will be without Macomb. Macomb, who was originally a Class AA school, have dropped in enrollment and have been a Class A school for the past few years. Limestone will replace Macomb in next years tournament.

Seniors Mary Lindstrom and Kimi Peck have joined the club of leading scorers for Galesburg. Lindstrom scored 10 points vs. Macomb in the morning game while Peck scored 11 and tied Sarah Pacheco for game honors in the win over Dixon. That means now that Galesburg has been led in scoring by ten different players this year. Well done!

The sophomore team won the Macomb Sophomore Tournament in strange fashion. After arriving late to their first game on Monday due to weather, the sophomores stepped off the bus, played and beat Quincy Notre Dame 53-33 to move to (2-0) in the tournament. The next opponent of the day, Rock Island, elected not to play the last game of the day against Galesburg and opted to forfeit the game to Galesburg handing the Streaks the championship. Galesburg moves to 11-5 on the season with the win over Rock Island. The two teams will meet for a final time on Thursday in Galesburg.

Special thanks go out to Scott McNeil and Mary Lou Gunther for helping film for the Streaks on Saturday and Monday respectively, and to former Streak Bonny Apsey for keeping the book on Saturday. All were drafted into action to help out the sophomores who normally travel with the varsity and their support staff. Thanks again!

January 16, 2000

Up to today, Galesburg has been led in scoring by eight different players. Junior Rachel Bicego joined the group on Saturday with a 13 point outburst vs. Freeport.

The sophomores won easily over Canton in the opening round of the Macomb Sophomore Tournament in a game that proved to be one for the record books. The sophomores tied a record for fewest points given up in a half (4 points), a feat they did back on January 5, 1990 vs. Sterling. They also set a record for fewest points given up in a game (15 points) which beat the old record of 19 points in a game vs. Sterling on January 9, 1993, and they broke the record for opponents FG% as well lowering the mark to 17.1% on Saturday beating the mark set on January 11, 1994 vs. Canton (17.9%).

The sophomores conclude the tournament on Monday, January 15 at 11:00 am vs. Quincy Notre Dame and then at 3:00 pm vs. Rock Island. The tournament champion will be decided on overall record first, and then by fewest points given up.

January 13, 2000

Senior point guard Jaque Howard was selected as the Register-Mail Athlete of the Week honors yesterday for her play in Galesburg's wins over Moline and Geneseo last week. Congratulations Jaque.

Tonight's game with #15 ranked Quincy is PACK THE PLACE night and should prove to be great entertainment. Galesburg beat Quincy in their first game of the year 59-32 in Quincy on Nov. 23. Since then, Quincy has lost three times. Once to Peoria Manual and once to #6 rated Chicago Washington and on Tuesday, to Jacksonville 70-57.

January 11, 2000

Galesburg's 29 point win over Geneseo was their last before Wednesday's seeding meeting at LaSalle Peru. There, the coaches will seed the teams for the upcoming sectional leading up to the state tournament. In Galesburg's win, senior Jaque Howard was 5-5 shooting three-pointers, all in the first half, and finished with 15 points.

The GHS sophomores got back on the winning track by beating once beaten Peoria Notre Dame. Galesburg outscored the Irish 24-11 over the final period for the winning margin. Galesburg improves to 8-4.

January 6, 2000

Galesburg remained in control of the Western Big 6 conference by beating Moline by 32 points. Galesburg looked impressive in the first quarter and closed out the quarter with a run that left Moline spinning and Galesburg with a 13 point advantage. Moline, however answered in the second period closing the gap to 5 by half. Galesburg then went on to outscore Moline 42-15 in the second half looking well oiled.

Galesburg returns to action on Saturday opening their Martin Luther King Tournament against Geneseo at 1:30 pm.

The sophomores lost 29-48 to undefeated Moline and slip to 7-4 (2-3) on the season. They play Peoria Notre Dame on Saturday at 9:00 am for a nonconference game.

December 31, 1999

Galesburg returned late Thursday night from a successful holiday tournament. Galesburg captured the grand championship for the third consecutive year at the State Farm Bloomington Normal Holiday Classic.

Mondays game allowed for ample minutes for the GHS reserves as Galesburg led 45-6 at the half and coasted to the win. Both teams set a tournament record for fewest fouls while neither team shot a free throw in the game.

On Tuesday, Galesburg took on a good Ottawa team beating them 65-31. Galesburg shooting in the first half proved to be the difference going 15-30 from the field and 9-9 from the free throw line to open a 44-14 halftime lead.

Wedensdays rematch of last years state semifinal with Lincoln showcased two of the top teams in the state of Illinois. The game between Lincoln rated #8 in the AP poll and Galesburg #6, was delayed approximately 45 minutes starting at 9:45 pm which increased the level of anticipation for the large crowd. Defense was the difference as Galesburg held Lincoln's high powered offense of (6-1) Kelsey Bruce, (6-0) Allison Humbert, and guard Angie Bossingham to 14 points total.

On Thursday, it was no rest for the weary. With the last nights late start, the game between Galesburg and Lincoln did not get over until 11:05 pm. Galesburg's AA championship game with #3 rated Chicago Washington started at 10:30 am. Chicago Washington featured two Division I athletes in Dejeanette Flournoy (Illinois State) and Leslie Hill (Minnesota) and Division I potential Angelina Williams. The two teams battled to a 28-28 tie at the half before Galesburg turned up the defense holding Chicago Washington to a tournament record low of 0 points in the third period and only 7 points for the second half.

In the Grand Championship game vs. Quincy Notre Dame, Galesburg jumped out to a 17 point second quarter lead before allowing Notre Dame to within 6 at the half. The two teams struggled back and forth with Notre Dame taking a 2 point lead with 14 second remaining. After trying to run a play, Notre Dames Audra Frericks tipped the ball away before Galesburgs Megan Pacheco could recover the ball at half court and fire up a despiration half court three point shot that fell well short (al la North Carolina States Derrick Wittenburg). Waiting under the basket was Galesburgs Ashley Shepherd who caught the missed attempt and layed it in as time expired to force the first overtime. In the first overtime, the teams exchanged baskets three times to force the second overtime. Galesburg iced the game away at the free throw line for the 4 point win. Galesburg improves to 17-1.

The State Farm Bloomington Normal Holiday Classic all tournament team consisted of the following players:
Angelina Williams (Jr.), Chicago Washington; Megan Pacheco (Sr.), Galesburg; Jaque Howard (Sr.), Galesburg; Leslie Hill (Sr.), Chicago Washington; Angile Bossingham (Sr.), Lincoln; Amber Wisdom (So.), Geneseo. Congratulations.

Galesburg returns to action Thursday, January 6, 2000 vs. Moline.

December 22, 1999

The varsity team improved to 12-1 with a 74-52 win over Peoria Manual in a game that probably wasnt even that close. Galesburg looked impressive over the middle two quarters outscoring Manual 48-16 and led by 34 points after three quarters before subbing the entire bench.

Tuesdays win welcomed back Megan Pacheco into the playing rotation. Megan broke her foot in a non-basketball injury just prior to the season. GHS expects Megan to be back at full strength for the Bloomington Normal Holiday Classic.

The sophomore team closed out 1999 with a 22 point win over Peoria Manual. Galesburg placed four players in double figures and just missed on getting five players in double digits. The physical game was capped off by a half court three point basket by Noelle Peachey that left her hands from somewhere around Vandalia and hit as the buzzer sounded. Way to go Noelle. The sophomore team is now 7-3.

The freshman team won there game at Dunlap. Coach Barshinger and Coach Gerings team improves to 6-3 on the year.

Happy 21st birthday to former Streak Molly Watson today!

December 19, 1999

The GHS sophomores also won on Saturday improving their record to 6-3. The sophomores outrebounded Streling 37-26 and were led in rebounding by freshman Lindsey Cooper with 7. Traci Larson added 11 points, while Amanda Gunther had 10, and Melissa Pacheco had 9, to beat the previously unbeaten Golden Warriors.

Galesburg lost its first game of the year to Park Ridge (Maine South) in a colsely contested game. Galesburg was without the services of junior Sarah Pacheco who was commited to a family obligation. Senior Megan Pacheco (broken foot) is expected back sometime in the next two weeks.

Noticeably absent from Tom Loweys Register-Mail article were results from the GHS sophomore game which the Streaks won in overtime 43-37. Maine Souths Anne Forde hit a three point basket with 15 seconds remaining to tie the score and send the game into overtime. In the overtime Galesburg went 4-6 from the free throw line to ice away the win. Oddly enough, through the first five sophomore games, only one box score and one writeup have been published in the paper even though all results were provided to the paper. Currently the sophomores are 3-2 and 1-1 in the conference.
