The Inside Scoop

March 10, 1999

Want to know the state tournament scoop? A quick wrap-up of this year's state tournament.

March 2, 1999

Role players Rachel Bicego and Sarah Pacheco combined for the winning basket in last night's game. Rachel Bicego found Sarah Pacheco on a weakside backcut with 1.6 seconds remaining to provide for the winning margin. Galesburg improves to 31-1 and will face Willmette Loyola in Friday's 6:45 quarterfinal game.

Tickets will be available through the GHS athletic office starting today. For details on ticket distribution, call 309-343-9830. Lower bowl tickets are $8.00 and upper bowl tickets are $6.00. Plenty of seats will be available in the 10,200 seat Redbird Arena.

February 28, 1999

Tickets for Monday's Supersectional will be available at the GHS athletic office from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm on Monday. All tickets are $4.00. GHS is allotted 1,000 tickets, however, tickets will be available at the door. Capacity for Chick Evans Feildhouse is 6,044, not 5,000 as reported in the Register-Mail.

A limited supply of 5-Peat Sectional Championship t-shirts are available at GHS for $10 each. Get there early if you want to purchase one as they will run out fast.

Monday's opponent, Harlem, poses some great offensive weapons in 6-1 junior, Aminata Yanni, who was an honorable mention All-American in Street and Smith Magazine, and in senior guards Brandi Mitchell and Tawna Davies. The front line (besides Yanni) is 6-3, 6-1, and 6-3. Harlem coach Paul Perrone said, "We are going to try and let Mitchell and Davies, who can handle anyone's press, let them handle Galesburg's"

February 27, 1999

Monday's supersectional game at Northern Illinois University is hosted by DeKalb High School, however, Northern's Sports Information Department runs things on game night. The NIU Sports Information Department is one of the best in the nation and is run by longtime Sports Information Director Mike Korcek. Assistant Sports Information Director Steve Nemeth is a graduate of Galesburg High School and even had Coach Evan Massey as a teacher. Media life will be easy Monday night.

Coach Rux is a Northern Illinois University graduate earning his degree in 1989. He was a manager with the Men's Basketball Team under the direction of Jim Rosborough who is now the top assistant to Lute Olson at the University of Arizona.

February 26, 1999

DID SOMEBODY SAY, "GALESBURG?" In Rocky III, the Galesburg Silver Streaks proved to be too much for Rocky's physical play. Galesburg advanced to Monday's Supersectional in DeKalb at Northern Illinois University's Chick Evans Fieldhouse by jackhammering the Rocks of Rock Island 76-62. Galesburg will play Machesney Park (Harlem) a 72-54 winner over Rockton (Hononegah).

Congratulations to Sarah Larson who last night became the all time leading scorer at Galesburg High school by eclipsing Tiffany Sibley's mark of 1,806. Larson currently sits at 1,813 and counting.

The huge Galesburg following really energized the Streaks. The loud, vocal, boisterous crowd gave Galesburg the lift it needed several times early in the game and down the stretch as the Streaks, like a champion surfer, were able to ride the wave of momentum the crowd was able to provide. Thank you, Galesburg fans!

February 23, 1999

Galesburg advanced to Thursday's Sectional final with a 88-53 win over Freeport. Galesburg jumped to a 23-2 lead and never looked back. They will play Rock Island, a 70-66 winner over Ottawa last night. It will be the third meeting for the conference foes. Galesburg won the two previous meetings over the Rocks 78-57 at Rock Island on November 24, and 54-41 at Galesburg on January 28. Said Coach Rod Leatherman, "This is a game my kids have looked forward to for awhile. We're not going to back down from the challenge and we're going to be excited to play them."

February 21, 1999

Going into the season the Streaks knew they had a tough schedule but going into Monday's sectional, the strength of the schedule really begins to unfold. 23 of Galesburg's 28 regular season games were against teams with winning records. Of the 22 different teams that Galesburg has played this season, 10 are sectional qualifers or better with 8 being AA sectional teams (Barrington, Freeport, Rock Island, Ottawa, Peoria Richwoods, Washington, Peoria Notre Dame, and Chicago Maria) and two being Class A supersectional teams (Alleman, and Mendota).

Senior Katie McGunnigal will shoot in Monday's Country Companies Three Point Showdown with her competition begining at approximately 5:15 pm at Geneseo's JD Darnell High School.

Happy Birthday to Allen Massey who turned two on February 20th. When asked about what was the best thing about turning two, Allen said, "Hooray!" then continued, "From what I've heard from the other kids at day care and what my other friends have told me, that being two gives you the license to be terrible. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to create havoc for my parents. I've got a lot of things planned for this year, none of which I can reveal at this time, however, many of the girls on the basketball team have been very helpful in giving me ideas of things to do and tricks to play on my parents." Good luck Mr. and Mrs. Massey.

Monday's game with Freeport begins at 6:00 pm at Geneseo. Tickets are available only at the door. All tickets are $4.00 and are general admission. The winner will face the winner of the Rock Island/Ottawa game that follows immediately after the Galesburg/Freeport game.

With Galesburg's win Monday night, it marked the 12th consecutive regional championship.

Galesburg and area residents can tune into WGIL AM 1400 to hear an interview with the current seniors on the team on Monday February 22, at 9:15 am.

February 19, 1999

Congratulations to Senior Katie McGunnigal as she posted the top score in the Country Companies Three Point Showdown making nine of fifteen shots. Katie will advance to Monday's sectional competition. Laura Miller and Amber Wisdom of Geneseo and Moline's Brooke Vallejo also advanced.

Galesburg will play Freeport on Monday night at 6:00 pm. Freeport was a 60-30 winner over LaSalle-Peru last night. Galesburg previously beat Freeport on December 5, 1998, 68-54 at Freeport.

February 18, 1999

Let's start the insanity. Tonight begins the state tournament series for the Streaks. Galesburg recieved a bye in the first round of the tournament and will face Geneseo tonight for the regional championship. Geneseo comes in with a veteran team and two outstanding guards in Meagan Stein and Nicole Minneart. Geneseo has a talented freshman in guard Amber Wisdom. Game time is set for 7:30 tip off. Winner of tonight's game will play Monday at Geneseo vs. the winner of the LaSalle-Peru/Freeport game at 6:30pm.

The Country Companies Three Point Showdown continues tonight with the winners from the Moline-Geneseo game Monday advancing to tonight's shootout set to begin at 6:45pm. Advancing from Monday's game is Junior Brooke Vallejo from Moline, Senior Meagan Stein, Freshman Amber Wisdom and reigning state champion, Senior Laura Miller, all from Geneseo. Galesburg's four entrants will be Junior Stacy Boettcher, Junior Mary Lindstrom, Seinor Katie McGunnigal, and Sophomore Shanell Jackson. Good luck!

February 9, 1999

Congratulations to Christy Woodard's freshman team. They finished their season at 10-8 and are excited and ready to move to the next level.

In last night's sophomore game the Streaks' were without starting post player Jenny Swanson who was hit with the flu. The Streaks were able to step up and win at Quincy 49-41 and finish their season at 18-2 and 8-2 in the conference. Congratulations sophomores!

February 9, 1999

Who is that masked man? Before every Streaks game, some fan yells out "Hi Ho Silver!" with a crowd response of "Away!" Is it the Lone Ranger himself? Could it be Jay Silverheels? Only "The Shadow" knows.

Two fan busses are lined up for Thursday's Quincy trip. A few seats are still available. Call 309-343-9830 for information on obtaining a seat.

February 5, 1999

Streaks fans should see today's Chicago Tribune for a feature article on the team and Saturday's game with Barrington. Barrington is coming off a loss to Palatine. Another feature on the Streaks will be in Tuesday's Chicago Sun Times.

As of last night, there were still ten spots remaining for the fan bus to Barrington. If interested, call 309-343-9830 for information. Seats also still remain for a second bus to Quincy. Call for details.

February 1, 1999

Sarah Pacheco did not play in Saturday's game due to flu-like symptoms. Her status is day to day.

January 24, 1999

The week ahead should supply some great basketball. On Thursday, January 28, Galesburg welcomes Rock Island to John Thiel Gym for what could be the confrence championship should Galesburg pull off the win. Rock Island will come in with a (17-2) (5-2 WB6) mark, are currently rated #13 in the state of Illinois, and are coming off a 64-40 win over #11 rated Peoria Richwoods. Galesburg won the previous meeting on November 24, 78-57 at Rock Island.

On Saturday, January 30, Galesburg entertains #11 Peoria Richwoods (17-4) who are coming off a loss at #13 Rock Island last Saturday. Galesburg won the previous meeting on November 28, 84-70.

Sophomore Ashley Shepherd set a sophomore record making 10-10 at the charity stripe Thursday, January 21, vs. East Moline breaking the 6-6 mark set by Ami Pendry and Rachel Bicego. She also tied a sophomore mark pulling down 17 rebounds tying three former Streaks, Heather Aten, Gina Miller, and Katie McCants. Congratulations Ashley.

January 22, 1999

Former Streak Jennifer Bulkeley (1996) was named Player of the Week for the second time this year. Bulkeley is a forward for the University of the South (15.4 ppg 6.5 rpg leads team) and was named Player of the Week by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) for the weeks of Nov. 20 and Jan. 5. Bulkeley's team is currently 7-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Congratulations Jennifer.

Congratulations to head coach Evan Massey on his 400th varsity win. Massey clinched number 400 with a win over Washington on Tuesday.

Attendence for the girls portion of the Classic increased over last year largely due to the large Galesburg following. Well done!

Sarah Larson's 30 points against Mendota was the top girls' performance for the tournament.

The sophomore game with Macomb was posponed due to the weather and will be rescheduled for a later date.

Tuesday's game with Quincy will see some new faces on the Quincy bench. Quincy Superintendent Michael Anderson, whose daughter is a senior on the Quincy team, replaced Tom Berry and Gary Handrick with Shane Barnes and Gail Church.

December 23, 1998

Sophomore Ashley Shepherd set a sophomore record for points in a game. Ashley was 15-23 from the field and ended up with 34 points. Her 15 FG's in a game was also a sophomore record.

The sophomore team is off until Saturday, January 2, 1999, when they will travel to Macomb for a 10:30 am single game.

The varsity team once again place 5 players in double figures. Not bad when you consider that two of them are not starters.

The Class AA basketball poll is out. Galesburg debuts at #2. (Wednesday, December 23, 1998) 98-99 Illinois Class AA Girls AP Poll

To get scores, parings and tournament information, go to the Bloominton-Normal Holiday Classic web page as this page probably won't get updated until after the tournament.

December 20, 1998

Galesburg plays its final home game for the 1998 portion of the season Tuesday night at John Thiel Gym. Galesburg hosts Peoria Manual a team the Streaks have never beaten.

Saturday's win over Sterling made coach Evan Massey the winningest basketball coach ever at GHS, boys or girls. His 397 wins pushes him past former boys coach John Thiel (396). Quite a mark! Congratulations Coach Massey!

The freshman game at Macomb on January 2 has been cancelled. The sophomore game will still be played but has been moved to 10:30 am.

December 18, 1998

Congratulations to Coach Evan Massey notching his 396th win tying him with John Thiel as the winningest basketball coach in Galesburg history. The win didn't come easy. Galesburg got all it wanted from Moline as the Streaks hung on to win 76-71. Galesburg placed five players in double figures (four starters and one reserve).

Thursday's game marked the return on Jennifer Zolper in the Streaks rotation. The senior forward injured her knee this summer and was released December 15th to play for the Streaks.

December 17, 1998

Apparently a mistake has been made (hard to believe isn't it). In the coach's bios, I had Coach Evan Massey passing John Thiel last year as the winningest basketball coach in Galesburg High School history. Due to some number checking and help from the Register-Mail's Jay Redfern, Thiel's record stands at 396 wins and 90 losses (.815) in 18 years. Massey is currently at 395 wins and 173 losses (.695). If the Streaks win tonight, Massey could tie Thiel with a win over Moline.

Massey could hit the 400 win mark during the Bloomington-Normal Holiday Classic.

December 14, 1998

Saturday's victory over Chicago Maria etched Sarah Larson's name in the record book. Her 41 point effort bested Tiffany Sibley's 39 point total set during the 1990-91 season. She had a game high 12 rebounds to go along with the school record 41 points in a game.

Larson was the Register-Mail's Athlete of the week last week and could make a strong case for winning the award two weeks in a row. Perkins RestaruanWashington-(5)Springfield Southeast game at 5:30 pm at University High School.

To get scores, parings and tournament information, go to the Bloominton-Normal Holiday Classic web page.

This week Galesburg gets back into the conference race with a road game at Moline on Thursday and then at non-conference opponent Sterling on Saturday. Galesburg finishes up with Peoria Manual on Tuesday at John Thiel Gym before breaking for the holiday.

December 8, 1998

Rock Island Alleman comes into Thursday's game fresh off its championship of the Lady Rebel Tournament. Alleman landed three players on the all-tournament team in Emily Crosser, Brianne DeDonker and Alecia Logan. Aleman is currently undefeated in the confrence at (1-0).

Chicago Maria also comes into John Thiel Gym (Saturday) with some impressive credentials. They are currently (7-3) and lost to Loyola on Monday 59-52, but they made several charges at the Ramblers. Sophomore Laniece Thomas (19 pts) and Nina Solava led the charges for Maria. Thomas's brother (Donald Whiteside) played college basketball at Northern Illinois, had short stints in the NBA, and is currently playing overseas in Europe.

Sophomore Taren Cowan is scheduled to have her ACL sugery on Wednesday, December 9. She injured the knee on November 17, in a practice situation.

December 7, 1998

The Streaks begin another tough week with confrence opponent Alleman on Thursday and then Chicago Maria on Saturday. Both games are scheduled to play at John Thiel Gym.

Forward Megan Pacheco was held out of Saturday's game with Freeport due to an inflamed nerve in her foot. Her status is day to day.

The sophomores 61-24 win over Freeport may have been the most complete game the sophomores have played this year. The sophomores move to 5-0 on the season.

December 4, 1998

Sarah Larson's career high 37 points led the way for the Streaks in a hard fought victory over East Moline last night. Larson's 37 was just two points off the school record 39 set by Tiffany Sibley.

The Streaks travel to Freeport tomorrow for a 12:30/2:00 matchup with the Pretzels.

Happy Birthday today to Streak Stacy Boettcher and Coach Rux.

Not to be outdone, Sarah Larson poured in 33 to lead the Streaks to their third win over the weekend beating Class A power Carthage 78-56. Larson corralled 19 rebounds to go along with her 33 points.

The freshman and sophomore teams also won their openers this weekend. The freshman beat Canton and the sophomores beat Peoria High 69-32.

Another tough week lies ahead for Galesburg as they travel to Rock Island on Tuesday for what should be a great matchup. Both teams return all five starters from last year's teams. The two teams played three times last year with the Streaks taking a 2-1 advantage. On Friday, Galesburg returns to the Thanksgiving Classic to meet Peoria High and then on Satruday, Galesburg will play Peoria Richwoods. Peoria High and Richwoods were recently ranked #1 and #2 respecitvely in the Peoria area by the Peoria Journal Star.

November 9, 1998

Congratulations to Streaks manager Erin Snyder. She was named the DAR winner at GHS. Erin along with fellow manager Pam Bess are a great help to the coaching staff. The work they do may go unnoticed by many, but they are a HUGE help to the program. Thanks Pam and Erin!
