The Inside Scoop

March 5, 1997

The Streaks will go through a final work out in Galesburg today before heading to Bloomington/Normal for their second straight state appearance. They will face Homewood-Floosmoor at 12:15 in the state quarterfinals.

Jaque Howard will be the second shooter in group 4 of the Happening '97 Three-Point Shootout. Jaque will shoot at 6:12 pm on Thursday at Redbird Arena.

February 28, 1997

Jaque Howard advanced in the Country Companies Three Point Shootout on Thursday night. Shooting last, Jaque needed to make at least six three pointers to advance to the state finals. Jaque hit 8 of 15 shots making her the top qualifer from the Moline Sectional. Jaque actually had 9 but stepped on the line on one of her attempts. She will advance to the State Final at ISU's Redbird Arena. Congratulations Jaque!

The Streaks had a quirk in their schedule prior to Thursday's championship game. Because of a communication mixup, the 5:00 bus origianally scheduled to take the players to Moline didn't come until 5:45. Not able to wait that long, the Streaks loaded up in the coach's cars and Coach Massey, Coach Peachey, Coach Wynne, and Coach Rux drove the players to the game. A story they will all be able to tell for the rest of their lives.

February 26, 1997

Jaque Howard advanced in the Country Companies Three Point Shootout on Monday night. She will shoot again on Thursday, and should she be one of the top four shooters, she will advance to the State Final at ISU's Redbird Arena.

Little Allen Massey made his first public appearance at where else but a gym. John Thiel Gym to be exact. It was a brief photo appearance, but look for the little guy in the program should the Streaks advance to the State Tournament.

February 25, 1997

Galesburg will play Rock Island on Thursday for the Sectional Championship in Moline. Rock Island was a 57-54 winner over Moline in the Sectional Semifinal.

The Streaks were nearly without Assistant Coach Steve Peachey (or at least his left eye). Peachey was poked in the eye by a coloring book which tore the cornea of his left eye. He wore an eyepatch for a day and a half before fully recovering. It was suggested that he keep the eyepatch to make him look more like a pirate, but he declined.

February 21, 1997

What a night for the Streaks. 1450 people saw the Streaks win their 10th consecutive regional title by a score of 110-30. Every Streak saw action in the first half, and 13 of14 players scored in the game. Coach Massey's club improves to 29-0 tying, the record for number of wins in a season for the third consecutive year.

However, the win almost came without the presence of Coach Massey himself. With Coach Massey's wife Amy expecting a baby on March 7th, the Masseys knew that the baby could arrive any day. At approximately 5:15, Mrs. Massey went into labor leaving Coach Peachey and Coach Rux at the helm. While the two assistants went through the pre-game ritual, Massey returned 20 minutes before gametime to walk out on the floor with the team.

Coach Massey left shortly after the game while the team celebrated and at11:30, Mrs. Massey gave birth to their first child, a boy, Allen Wright Massey. What a day! Both child and mother are doing well. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE MASSEYS! We wish them all the best!

In other game notes, Galesburg's Jaque Howard and Leslie Gumm advanced in the Country Companies Three Point Shootout. Jaque made 7 of 15 to advance while Leslie made 5 of 15 to advance. Both will shoot on Monday before the Galesburg-Freeport game.

February 18, 1997

Galesburg will play Lasalle-Peru, a 55-54 winner over Geneseo on Monday night, on Thursday for the Regional Championship. The winner will advance to Monday's Sectional game at Moline's Wharton Feildhouse.

February 14, 1997

The Streaks finish their regular season at 28-0 accomplishing what no other basketball team (boys or girls) has been able to accomplish since 1905-1906 boys team went 11-0.

The Streaks accomplished this despite some adverse conditions at Rock Island. A fight broke out in the stands at the end of the third quarter causing one distraction, while the Streaks reserves were hit with pennies, bottle caps, and other debris throughout the game.

The sophomores finished their season at 19-2 overall and 9-1 in the in Western Big Six good enough for first place in the conference.

Angie Galyean came to play last night. The senior forward went 7-7 from the feild just missing tying Jennifer Bulkeley and current sophomore assistant Trisha Hickey's record of 8-8.

...and Melanie Pendergrass had 11 assists for the Streaks just missing Ann Henderson's mark of 12 assists for the game. Two outstanding efforts!

The sophomores played a close one, beating Notre Dame 48-44. Neither team led by more than 7 points. Jenny Zolper's two big rebounds with under a minute to play (one an offensive putback to give the Streaks a 4 point lead with 0:19 remaining) sealed the win for the Streaks.

1997 Senior Class

These four girls have made significant contributions to the Galesburg girls' basketball program. Molly Watson has played four years of varsity, Angie Galyean for three years, and Meg Sherwood and Jessica Thompson for two years. Over the last four years Galesburg has won four Regional Championships, four Streaks' Classic Championships, has been rated in the top twenty in the State each year, has been in the Sweet Sixteen twice, has taken 3rd in State, and has compiled a record of 103-15. When it comes to this senior class, "Nobody does it better."

Angie Galyean

Angie is the daughter of Gary and Rhonda Quarterman. She has been a member of the varsity basketball team for the last three years. As a junior she was one of the first off the bench for the Streaks. This year she has started every game. Angie's quickness and aggressive approach have been a most valuable asset to the team. She is captain of the 1996-7 team, and the intensity with which she plays has certainly provided us with an inspiration. After high school she plans to attend college but is undecided as to where. She would like to pursue a career in the field of medicine.

Meg Sherwood

Meg is the daughter of Dan and Liz Sherwood. Last year Meg was the first guard off the bench for Galesburg and she has filled the same role this year. While it is not always easy to come off the bench, Meg has filled the role very well for the Streaks. The combination of her size and shooting ability have been important for the team. Many times she has come in to give us an offensive boost. She has scored in double figures on several occasions this year. Meg was also a member of the state qualifying golf team this past fall. She plans to attend Truman State after high school.

Jessica Thompson

Jessica is the daughter of John and Karla Thompson. Jessica has started as center for the Streaks the last two years. The combination of her rebounding and nice touch around the basket have played a big role in our success. Often times she has been matched up to guard the other team's best offensive post players. While she may not always be a big scorer for us, she quietly gets the job done for us on the boards and defensively. In addition to playing basketball, Jessica was a member of the volleyball team. She plans to attend college and play basketball but at this time is undecided as to where.

Molly Watson

Molly is the daughter of John and Peggy Watson. Presently she is #2 in scoring, #1 in assists, #3 in steals, and #1 in threes for a career at GHS. Last year she was selected All-Conference, Manual Tourney MVP, All-State by IBCA, Chicago Tribune, and Chicago Sun-Times, Player of the Year by the Peoria Journal-Star. National scouting services have rated her one of the top 100 players in America. This year she was the MVP of the Rockford Tourney. Her work ethic and intensity have been an inspiration. She will attend DePaul University next year on a basketball scholarship.

January 20, 1997

Former Streaks and current Illini women's baskeball players Ann Henderson and Bonny Apsey both contributed to the Illini's win over Indiana. Ann played about 15 minutes and was 5-6 from the free throw line and had a steal and a beautiful assist to Melissa Parker on the break. Bonny, playing in her first college game, shot two one and one free throw attempts unfortunately missing on both attempts, but she did have a blocked shot in the lane on an Indiana player. We are very proud of both Ann and Bonny! Keep up the great work!

Thursday, January 23, is Pack the Place and Senior night. The Streaks will be honoring its four seniors: Meg Sherwood, Angie Galyean, Molly Watson and Jessica Thompson. We thank these four senoirs for their dedication and leadership over the last four years and wish them well in their future endevors.

In the next few days we will highlight each of the seniors and update you on their future plans.

The Streaks hope to see you and yours out to the game on Thursday! With Pack the Place night, the Streaks hope to go over the 1707 attendence mark. Tell your friends and neighbors to come out and catch the action. Only two home games left! (plus one regional game)

DID YOU KNOW...that Molly Watson was not the first Silver Streak to shoot at the United Center. Last year Jenny Zolper was picked to participate in a contest during the Bulls game. Jenny hit her shot and won pizza for her entire section. Ironically, Molly shot at the same basket that Jenny did, and won her contest as well, winning $500 for the GHS girls' basketball program! It must bet the lighting at that end of the building! And Michael Jordan says he dosen't feel comfortable shooting at the United Center! HA!

January 18, 1997

The sophomores had to withstand a late Alleman rally. Up by as many as twenty points in the fourth quarter, Galesburg hung on to win by four, 63-59.

The Streaks will head south on Sunday to catch the Illinois women play. The Illini host Indiana on Sunday and the Streaks hope to see former Streak and current Illini Ann Henderson in action. Ann is a regular reserve and part time starter for the Illini.

Another former Streak, Bonny Apsey, will also be on hand for the Illini, but has yet to see action for the Illini this year.

January 16, 1997

In the SportsChannel Three Point Shootout, the girls' team beat the boys' team. Galesburg's Molly Watson shot last of all competitors and needed two baskets to tie the score and three to win. Each contestant shot twelve balls. After missing all of the balls on her first rack, Molly came back to make three of her last eight shots to win the contest in front of a sellout crowd at the United Center and a live SportsChannel audience.

The Sun-Times' Steve Tucker was one of the judges for the contest. The Sun-Times girls' basketball guru talked hoops with Molly Watson and Dana Leonard after the shootout in his choice seats three rows behind the Bulls bench.

Each girl will receive $500 for their school's athletic department. What makes the win even more special is that the girls' team won despite having to use boys basketballs which are larger and a bit heavier than girls basketballs.

Coach Massey, Coach Peachey, and Coach Rux were able to see the contest live as they also made the trip to Chicago. A great time was had by all!

Congratulations, Molly! We are very proud of you!
