With the season now complete, we are now able to update our record books,
share some awards and bring closure to another fantastic season. Amanda
Gunther and Annie Parkin were selected to the Western Big 6 All-Conference
team this year. Junior Jenna Bicego was an honorable mention candidate.
Amanda Gunther was also selected to the Illinois Basketball Coaches
Association All-State team for 2003. The senior forward finished her
career with 949 total points, good for #11 on the all-time career scoring
list and she hauled in a career 465 rebounds ranking her #12 in that category.
Congratulations Amanda, Annie and Jenna.
March 4, 2003
Tickets for Friday's class AA girls' state finals will be on sale to GHS
students on Tuesday, March 4 at 7:15 am across from the ticket office. Students
must present their current GHS ID card to purchase a ticket.
Tickets will be on sale to GHS Girls' Basketball season ticket holders
on Wednesday March 5 from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm in the north corridor of the
high school. Fans will not be allowed to get in line until after school
is dismissed at 2:40 pm. A pass holder may purchase a limit of 4 tickets.
A person must have one All-Sport pass or Girls Basketball season ticket
for each ticket purchased. All remaining tickets will be available
to the general public after 5:30 pm in the ticket office until 8:00 pm Wednesday
night. There will not be any sales after Wednesday.
GHS faculty and staff may sign up of a maximum of 2 tickets for Friday's
game in the athletic office on Tuesday from 7:30 am until 4:00 pm.
Reserved seat tickets in the lower level are $9, while general admission
tickets in the upper level are $7. Game time on Friday is 1:45 pm
against Oak Park (Fenwick).
State T-Shirts will be available at GHS bookroom starting on Tuesday afternoon.
Shirts will also available in Wednesday's ticket lines.

Tickets for Monday's game in DeKalb with Rockford (Boylan) are available
in the GHS athletic office (309-343-9830). Tickets are $5.00 and all
seats are reserved. Monday's super-sectional game will be the first
supersectional ever played in NIU's Convocation Center which seats 10,000.
Plenty of tickets will be available.

Sophomore Michelle Dennison advanced in the three-point shooting contest
nailing 8 three pointers out of 15. She will shoot before Monday's
Galesburg-Sycamore matchup in the East Moline Sectional. She will
shoot at approximately 6:45 pm.

A fan bus sponsored by the GHS Booster Club will be available for Thursday's
game with Ottawa. The bus will leave once again from the west circle
drive at 4:30 pm. The cost of the trip is $16 and does not include
the price of admission to Ottawa High School. For more information,

Perfection....The sophomore team capped an undefeated season on Thursday
night downing Peoria (Manual) 75-24 to finish 23-0 on the season. The
team set or tied 19 team records along the way and won by an average of
28 points a game. Pretty impressive. The 23 wins marks the best
season record posted by a team at Galesburg High School that went undefeated
on the year. Congratulations sophomores on achieving competitive excellence!

Regional action begins on Tuesday as the Streaks will take their 27-3
record into regional play at Ottawa. Game time is 6:00 pm and they
will play the winner of Monday's Streator/Minooka game. Doors will
open at 4:45 pm while the 3-point shooting contest will begin at 5:15
pm. There will be no advance sale of tickets. All tickets are
general admission and tickets are $3.00.
The Booster Club is sponsoring a fan bus to Ottawa. The bus
will leave at 3:15 pm and will leave from the west circle drive. Cost
of the bus is $16 and does not include a ticket to the game. Sign

With the win over Hillcrest on Saturday, the Galesburg Silver Streaks
moved to 26-3 on the season going into Thursday's final home game of
the season. Thursday will also mark our Senior Night celebration
as we honor the seven seniors who have been so instrumental to the success
of our season thus far. Alison Bauchman, Casey Berry, Erin Bruner,
Amanda Gunther, Elizabeth Hauslein, Erin Line, and Annie Parkin will all
be recognized for their contributions to the girls basketball program over
the last 4 years.
In the sophomore contest last Saturday, the sophomore team improved
to 22-0 and set two more team records along the way. In the 92-64
win, the team set a record for number of points scored in a game breaking
the previous high of 85 set earlier this year against Chicago (Maria). Freshman
Libby White's 12 assists gave her the single game assist record. Congratulations
Libby.
On Thursday night, as the sophomore team goes for it's undefeated
season, WAIK will broadcast the game live starting at 6pm Central time
to help honor their accomplishments and efforts throughout the year.

The combination of Galesburg's sophomore and varsity 20-0 sweep
of the Western Big 6 conference may be the first time that any conference
team has accomplished the feat. Several teams have had one team or
the other go undefeated in the conference but never has both teams been
in that situation.

In yesterday's 65-52 win at Sterling, the GHS sophomores moved
to 20-0 on the season and were backed by LaToya Wright's record setting
day. The sophomore forward threw down 35 points and collected
17 rebounds. Her 35 points beat Ashley Shepherd's mark of 34 points
in a December 22, 1998 game vs. Peoria Manual. The 17 rebounds
she gathered ties a sophomore rebounding record set by four former Streaks
players (Ashley Shepherd, Katie McCants, Gina Miller, and Heather Aten).

Galesburg will open its final home stand of the season on Thursday,
February, 6. The 3 game home stand will truly be the last of the
year, as Galesburg has been assigned to the Ottawa Regional when state
series play begins on February 17.

With their wins at Quincy last night, the sophomores and the
varsity both won the outright Western Big 6 championships. The
sophomores took a 69-34 matchup with the Blue Devils to clinch the title
while the varsity beat Quincy 63-40. This year's sophomore conference
title marks the third consecutive conference title for the sophomore Streaks,
and their sixth since the 92-93 season. For the varsity, it is the
11th conference title.
January 20, 2003
Both the varsity and sophomores won their respective divisions
of the Galesburg/Dunlap MLK Tournament. The varsity went a perfect
5-0 through the tournament while the sophomores went 4-0 through their
division. On the way to the championship in the varsity division,
the Streaks posted wins over two ranked teams according to the statewide
AP poll, Champaign (Centennial) and Peoria (Notre Dame).
January 12, 2003
After one weekend of play, Galesburg, Peoria (Notre Dame),
and Dunlap, all remain unbeaten in the varsity portion of the
Galesburg/ Dunlap Martin Luther King Tournament
. Galesburg had a come from behind win over Olympia
(55-43) on Saturday afternoon then had a resounding 14 point win over
#7 ranked Champaign (Centennial) (67-53) before a boisterous, energized
crowd.
The GHS sophomores went 2-0 in their portion of the tournament
with a 65-47 win over Olympia and a 68-49 win over Champaign Centennial.
The win over Olympia gave sophomore coach Michael Rux his 200th
win for his career. In his 13th season, he is now 201-56 (.781)
and 86-39 (.741) in the Western Big 6, since joining the staff in 1990.
The sophomores are now 14-0 on the season.
January 8, 2003
Senior Amanda Gunther was named to the State Farm Holiday
Classic All-Tournament Team. She was joined by:

Emily Markovich, Peoria Notre Dame
Megan Scaggs, Mt. Zion
Meredith Curtin, Taylorville
It marks the second time Amanda has received all-tournament
recognition. Amanda was also selected to the Streaks Classic All-Tournament
team in November. Congratulations Amanda.
Two of Galesburg's next three opponents are against ranked
teams. On Thursday, January 9, 2003, Galesburg will travel to
Rock Island (Alleman) to take on the Pioneers who received votes in
this week's Class A poll. Alleman already has wins over Carthage
(twice), Rockridge and Orion who have all been ranked in Class A. Then
on Saturday, January 11, 2003, the Streaks take on 7th ranked Champaign
(Centennial) at 7:30 pm in Thiel Gym.

The GHS sophomores tied a sophomore record for
points in a game with 85 in Saturday's win over Chicago (Maria). It
ties a record set on December 21, 1995 in a win at Rock Island over
the Rocks.

The Streaks debut at #14 in the initial
statewide poll
put out by the AP. On tap this week is Rock Island
and Chicago (Maria). Both games are in Galesburg.
December 5, 2002
With the win over Quincy, Galesburg takes sole
possession of first place in the Western Big 6 Conference in the
early going of the conference race.
The GHS sophomores set a sophomore rebounding record
on Thursday night collecting 51 rebounds over Quincy eclipsing the
mark set on November 22, 1994 in a game vs. Rock Island (Alleman) with
50 boards. Leading the way was Michelle Zolper's 8 boards.

Congratulations to Streaks great, Molly Watson. She
was inducted into the GHS Hall of Fame on November 30, 2002. As
of her induction date, Molly is 4th in career steals (305), 2nd
in assists (571), 5th in FT% (.741), 2nd in 3-pointers made (153),
6th in 3-point % (.368), 8th in games played (115), and 4th in total
points (1430). Molly is the first person ever inducted into the
GHS Hall of Fame on the first ballot after the mandatory 5-year waiting
period. Congratulations Molly.

The schedule for Friday, November 29, 2002, has been
changed due to Carthage's football team advancing to the Class 2A
Football State Championship Game on Friday night. As a result,
the Alleman-Carthage game scheduled for Friday at 10:30 am, has been
moved to Saturday, November 30, 2002, at 3:00 pm.

than 24 hours away, it is all systems go. As part of a joint
effort with WAIK and the Galesburg Area Convention and Visitors Bureau,

On Thursday, November 14, 2002, the girls basketball
program will hold a Spaghetti Supper and Silent Auction in conjunction
with their Meet the Streaks pre season scrimmages. The Silent
Auction will include an autographed basketball from 2002 Men's NCAA
Division I champion Maryland Terrapins head coach Gary Williams, 2002
Women's NCAA Division I champion Connecticut Huskies head coach Geno
Auriemma, and an autographed basketball of the 2002 varsity girls basketball
team. Tickets for the spaghetti dinner are $6.00 for adults and
$3.00 for children under 10 and will be held in the GHS cafeteria from
5:30 pm till 7:15 pm.
The Streaks will hold their pre season Meet the
Streaks scrimmage on Thursday, November 14, 2002, with the freshman
team starting at 6:00 pm, sophomores at 6:45 pm, and varsity at
7:30 pm in John Thiel Gym. Admission to the scrimmage is a 6-pack
of pop, all-sport, or water per family.
November 5, 2002
All three levels of Streaks basketball opened
the season yesterday with all reporting healthy numbers. Coach
Evan Massey greeted 20 varsity candidates at 6:30 am Monday morning,
while Coach Jay Barshinger welcomed 13 freshman candidates to
his opening workout at 3:00 pm. The sophomores worked out
14 sophomore candidates to their beginning practice at 5:30 pm.

Freshman assistant coach Cari Gehring has announced
that she has decided not to coach basketball this winter. She
is leaving to spend more time with her family. She will
continue to teach science at GHS. Taking her place will be
former Streak Sara Wood.
Sara Wood rejoins the Galesburg basketball family
as the freshman assistant coach. Sara returns after a stellar
high school and college playing career. Sara played for the Streaks
from 1992-1996 and is currently #10 on the Streaks career list in
steals (209), #3 in career assists (395), #14 in career shooting percentage
(.464 - 313-675), #14 in career 3-point shooting percentage (.323
- 21-74), #12 in career free throw percentage (.691 - 170-246), #11
in career games played (101), and #15 in career total points (817).
From there Sara went on to play at (Division
III) Beloit College and (NAIA) Benedictine College in Atchinson,
KS, earning her degree there in 2000. Sara is currently finishing
her masters in Exercise Physiology at Western Illinois University.
Her duties will be in assisting freshman coach Jay Barshinger in practice
and games.

Galesburg has announced its
2002-2003 girls basketball schedule
. Galesburg tips off it's season
on Friday, November 22 and will once again open with Peoria
(HS) like it did last year as part of the Streaks Classic. New
to this year's Streaks Classic is Olney (East Richland) who finished
ranked #19 in Class AA last year. Olympia and Streator are
new entries in the Martin Luther King Tournament. Streator
was a regular season opponent last year. New to the regular season
schedule is Buffalo Grove, a school that won the Class AA state
title in 1999-2000. The Streaks will travel to the Chicagoland
area twice this year. Saturday, December 7, at Park Ridge
(Maine South) and again on Saturday December 21, at Buffalo Grove. Galesburg
will entertain two Chicagoland schools as well. Saturday, December
14, vs. Chicago (Maria) and Saturday, February 8 vs. Country Club
Hills (Hillcrest). Galesburg will once again play (at) Sterling
and (vs.) Peoria (Manual) as part of their nonconference schedule.
The Western Big 6 portion of the schedule begins on Tuesday, November
26 at Moline, an Elite Eight qualifier last season.
