The Best of The Worst |

Magnet on. The cry of the Man of Magnet, Captain Invincible! Alan Arkin stars as the WWII era hero that turned to the bottle after the McCarthy hearings made him hang up his cape. My favorite part of this movie was the opening sequence of news reels covering the adventures of Captain Invincible against the Axis. The movie picks up in "modern day" (1983) where Invincible has been living as a wino...so sloshed that once he starts to sober up he finds that the reason New York looked so odd was that he's been in Australia all these years. The evil villain Mr. Midnight is still around manipulating the world from behind the scenes. Christopher Lee plays Mr. Midnight...and he actually sings in this movie in a scene where he tempts the recovering Invincible with a drink or two. Midnight's plans are ridiculous and racist, he was buddies with Hitler after all. There seems to be plenty of eye candy. Ah, the eighties, when they didn't mind having attractive women standing around in the background wearing next to nothing for no real reason. One of my favorite things was the Captain's old HQ...inside the head of the Statue of Liberty! Back in the day when I first found this movie and rented it I was so happy to have found a super hero movie, but they didn't have many that took comic books seriously. Like the Greatest American Hero, this is a comedy with the hero learning to fly and use his powers. Where I was really thrown for a loop was when the President of the USA broke out into song with the tune "bull shit". You have to see this zany movie to believe it. |
