The Best of The Worst |

I'm really getting into these late sixties-early seventies movies lately. And naturally I'm really into comic book movie adaptations...what could be cooler? Well this movie is a lot of fun, a "James Bond" style movie with gadgets and girls, cars and guns. Diabolik is not a super-spy, he's a super criminal...he seems to do it for the kicks...and his girl. Incredible stunts and over the top capers are business as usual for Diabolik as he makes fun of the establishment and brings home the cash for his hot girlfriend. I don't usually admire the "bad guy" in movies, but he's the anti-hero in this one, a man of few words, not really out to hurt anyone...but not too concerned if someone should get hurt along the way. It's another Epic Italian movie produced by Dino DeLaurentis with big sets and lots of special effects. This was shot by Mario Bava, best known for Black Sunday and other horror movies. They say it's one of his most visually impressive works. I agree that this movie is bold, colorful and shot with an eye toward comic book style. It's goofy fun with a hip soundtrack...and the DVD even has a bonus video by the Beastie Boys featuring them intercut with scenes from the movie. I first saw this movie on Mystery Science Theater 3000, but it's still good even without the bots. |
