If you're like me, you've probably seen Barbarella long ago on broadcast television and have vague memories of the crazy 60's Sci-Fi costumes, sets and props. But to really appreciate this gem, you need to see it uncut...yes, Jane Fonda is actually floating around naked as she changes clothes in zero gravity. Apparently Jane Fonda was married to the director of this flick...that explains a lot. It's a live adaption of a French comic strip, which, if you've ever thumbed through a copy of Heavy Metal magazine, you know they can be sexy as well as a little zany.

Let's not forget this was a DeLaurentis production, and he's known for his sweeping epics. This is no exception, as the sets and cast are impressive in scale. I'm particularly fond of the costumes in Barbarella. As a bit of trivia, the 80's band Duran Duran was named after the scientist in this movie.

As a side note, I found a little gem by Roman Coppola called "CQ" which is a tribute to films like Barbarella. It tells the story of an American man in Paris involved with the making of a 60's Sci-Fi "B-movie" like Barbarella called "Dragonfly". It's a fun movie exploring the collision of the world of "art" movies and low budget "Sci-Fi" movies. It's an enjoyable movie and Angela Lindvall, the model/actress playing Dragonfly, isn't hard on the eyes either.
