Louisville Male wins first football game

played at Chicago’s Soldier Field

October 4, 1924

On October 2, 1924, the Male High varsity football team boarded a train bound for Chicago to play Austin High School in a rematch of a game played in Louisville the year before (Male had won 72-0 in 1923).  The game was to be the first football game played at the newly-constructed Grant Park Municipal Stadium, located on along the shore of Lake Michigan.  At the conclusion of play on October 4, the “Purples” were again victorious, however this time the score was a bit closer—26 to 0.  A little over a year later, on November 11, 1925, Grant Park Stadium was renamed Soldier Field as a memorial to American soldiers who died in wars.
