William and Catherine Collins Loftus

William and Catherine Loftus were native to Dublin, Ireland. They traveled to the United States settling in Cincinnati, Ohio. We believe they entered the United States at the port of New Orleans in May 1848.

William and Catherine parented six children. The oldest being Patrick then Americus, Thomas, William, Mary and John. They are both buried in an unknown cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.

John and Elizabeth Phoena Loftus

John Loftus was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1827. He studied in Ireland to become a Catholic priest, but at the age of twenty one left Ireland, crossed the Atlantic on a sail ship to the United States, landing in New Orleans in May 1848. From New Orleans John traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio and engaged his services as a coachman for a short period. He then moved to Aurora, Indiana, Dearborn County, where he followed the same vocation until 1865, when he bought 155 acres of farm land in Sparta Township, Dearborn County, Indiana. He lived there until his death in November 23, 1903 at the age of seventy-six. John Loftus was a Democrat and belonged to the Catholic Church.

John's wife, Elizabeth Phoena Loftus was born in Dublin, Ireland and came to the United States as a young woman, setting in Aurora, where John and Elizabeth were married.

They were parents to four children, John, James, Thomas and Patrick. John Loftus married Hattie Crosby and lived in Versailles, Indiana. They had three children Grace Loftus, Joseph Loftus and Martin Loftus. Thomas married Ada James making their home in Lexington, Kentucky. Patrick Loftus married Nettie Scribner and lived in Hamilton, Ohio. They had four children, Raymond Loftus, Inez Loftus, Arthur Loftus and another child who died at an early age.

John and Elizabeth are buried in River View Cemetery, Aurora, Indiana.

James and Mary Shuman Loftus

James Loftus was born on May 23, 1857, in Dearborn County, Indiana. He was the son of John and Elizabeth (Phoena) Loftus. He received his early education in the public school and later attended Moores Hill College. After leaving school he went to Minnesota for a short time, but returned to Indiana to take charge of his father's farm, remaining there until eight years after his marriage, when he bough a tract of 100 acres, which he improved with good buildings, including a blacksmith shop. He later bought another 60 acres giving him one of the finest farms in the township.

James was a supporter of the Republican Party and was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He belonged to the Knights of Pythias, of which he was a past Grand Chancellor.

James was united in marriage on February 23, 1888 to Mary Shuman, daughter of John and Martha Ann (Thompson) Shuman. Mary Shuman Loftus was born near the town of Dillsboro, Indiana on September 27, 1861 Mary was employee my William S. Tyier and Martha E. Tyier until her marriage to James. From the union of James and Mary were born four children, Lee Loftus born December 6, 1888 died October 11, 1968; Edna Elizabeth Loftus born September 17, 1891, died at seventeen years old; Albert James Loftus born July 20, 1893 die May 15, 1977; Lester D. Loftus born September 20, 1903 and died on October 3, 1903.

James and Mary are buried in an unmarked grave at Concord Cemetery located in Dearborn County near Moores Hill, Indiana. It is believed both Edna and Lester are also buried in the Concord Cemetery.

James Loftus was a prosperous and well-respected citizen of the Sparta Township in which he lived. His thrifty and industrious habits set an excellent example for many of his townsmen.

Albert James and Frances Distler Loftus

Albert James Loftus (AJ) was the third child of James and Mary Loftus. Albert was born on July 20, 1893 at the family farm located in the rural of Moores Hill, Indiana. This was the same farm accrued from William Tyier by Albert's father James. Today the farmhouse has been restored and is located on Longbranch Road mid-way between Moores Hill, Dillsboro and Aurora, Indiana. Albert married Frances Eva Distler. Exact wedding date is unknown, however the year was 1913.

Frances Distler was the only child of Charles Distler and Mary Helfrish Distler. Frances father died when she was 9-months old and her mother died when she was only 4-years old. The Dilter's are both buried in the Concord Cemetery located on Longbranch road adjacent to the family farm. Mary Helfrish Distler had one sister. Emma Distler. She was married to Lewis Heath. Upon the death of both parents Emma and Lewis Heath assumed the raised Frances until she married Albert. Emma and Lewis Heath had on children and are buried in a small cemetery on Chesterfield Road just south of Moores Hill.

Albert Loftus was a factory worker at the Milan Furniture Factory for many years. He later worked for Schenley Distillery located in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Albert operated his own blacksmith shop located on the farm the same as did his father, James. Through his whole adult life he farmed the family farm.
