The current viewing conditions can be found on the Satellite Map of Louisville or the Water Vapor Image.  You can also check forecasts on STARcast, the Louisville Clear Sky Clock, or the Curby Clear Sky Clock.


Sidewalk Astronomy

Rauch Planetarium -  First Saturday of the month

This public observation is at the new Gheens Science Hall & Rauch Planetarium on the University of Louisville Belknap Campus just off Cardinal Blvd.  The observation starts right after the planetarium's "Evening Under the Stars" presentation.  Check the Calendar for times.


Regular Club Observation Location & Schedule

Regular club observations will be held at the LAS Observing Site near Curby in southern Indiana.  A Site Use Policy has been established to accommodate its public and private use.  An Observation Scheduling procedure has also been established.  We also have a set of Observatory Rules for use of that facility.  Instructions are available for operating the 12" Meade LX200.

This observation closest to the new moon is limited to LAS members, their guests, prospective members, or other interested individuals.

This observation closest to the first quarter moon is open to the public.

Observer’s normally set-up their equipment 30 to 60 minutes before sunset.  Click on 2005 Observation Times for Curby for detailed times.  Times for various dates and locations can be found on our Sunrise/Sunset Calculator.

The LAS Observing Site is west of Corydon, Indiana. Specific directions are as follows:

  • From LouisvilIe take I-64 west to the Leavenworth/Marengo Exit (92)
  • Go North (Right) on State Road 66
  • In 3 miles take a left on Curby Rd (There is a sign on the right hand side of 66 directing you to the town of Curby)
  • Go 1.7 miles on Curby Rd and take the first left past the town of Curby
  • The LAS property is 2.7 miles on the right. Look for a gravel road coming off of a 90 degree turn in the county road.

When the map comes up in a new browser window, click the browser's print button to print it or right click on the image and save it to a file. Unscheduled Observations

Unscheduled club observations are held at various locations in the area.  These include the LAS Observing Site near Curby in southern Indiana, and Long Run Park and Miles Park in Eastern Jefferson County.  Information on these observations is in the message board on the LAS Yahoo!Group.

DIRECTIONS TO LONG RUN PARK:
Take US 60 East "Shelbyville Road" past Gene Synder.
Look for Long Run Park Sign.
Take a left onto Flat Rock Road.
Turn right into park. There will be a sign and also a white silo.
Go roughly 1/2 mile until you see an electrical box.
Telescopes are set up in the field.

DIRECTIONS TO WALTER F. MILES PARK:
From the intersection of US 60 (Shelbyville Road) and I 265 (Gene Snyder Freeway) go east.  You will travel through one traffic signal.  The road goes down a hill to Floyd's Fork, then back up.  As you travel up the hill look for the green sign on the right.  The park is on the opposite side of Valhalla Golf Course.
