LAS FUTURE HISTORY

"To Infinity And Beyond"

A Report on the One Year Plan June 2004 - June 2005.

Segments in black are the plan as presented to the membership in June, 2004. My comments about our progress are in red.

  1. Inform Members Completely about Club Activities and Curby Dark Site

Timeline: June meeting. Method: Power Point Presentation by Brian Sieg showing progress and explaining history of site acquisition, cost, and master plan followed by discussion and questions.

Brian did a great job on this presentation which I believe gave us the enthusiasm to complete the project. It gave the Curby story and laid out all the plans from past presidents and boards so that we could proceed as envisioned.

2. Learn and Understand Our Membership’s Wants and Needs

  1. Timeline: Immediately Method: Survey to members.

    Ownership: Jann Hall

Our membership form now has a questionnaire on it that asks the members areas of interest.

3. Complete the Curby Dark Site.

Timeline: August, 2003 Method: Organized and scheduled work parties.
Understand Plan. Form Ad Hoc Committee.

Ownership: Brian Sieg- Observatory, Dick Schultz- Trailer
Members- Roger Curry, Bob Hart, Richard Stearman, Henry Sipes.

As of June, 2004, by all intents and purposes, the observatory is complete. Thanks to all who worked so hard on this project. As I have said before, we could have put the building up out of block, but it wouldn't have been as much fun.

4. Celebrate the 70th Anniversary.

Timeline: May-October, 2003

Method: Continue history column in Starword.
Set first Saturday in October as LAS DAY in LOUISVILLE.
Have 70 Scopes Set Up Around City on that weekend.
Have Awards Banquet and Invite Alumni on First Saturday.
Put out Press Releases.
Have Observation at All Riverside restaurants.

The history did get published in the Starword but as to an actual celebration, I did not delegate well and it resulted in only 18 people showing up for the actual meeting at which we celebrated this event. We did have a wonderful Christmas dinner and many times throughout the year, we mentioned our 70th anniversary. Ownership: Ken Alderson, David Rolink, Don Tabbutt, Randy Beachler, Pat Peak.

5. Host Deep Sky 2003

Despite a lot of effort, this didn't happen.  I don't think Louisville is the place for a Deep Sky Convention. Oh, well, we tried!

Timeline: May- September, 2003 Method: Committee meetings, volunteers. Ownership: Ken Alderson- Banquets and Hosting.
Pat Peak- Marketing
Alan Goldstein- Speakers, Program, Publicity
Shawn Laatsch- Facilities

6. Complete the Speakers for 2003 Programs

  1. Timeline: May-December, 2003

    Ownership: Craig Noble

Craig did a great job on this all year!

7. Increase Our Educational Programs in Schools and Sidewalk Astronomy

Timeline: May- December, 2003

Method: MARS OPPOSITION EVENTS.

Ownership: Dee Ozsvath, David Rolink, Roger Curry.

WOW! Huge successes here thanks to leaders like Dee, Julie, Pat, Kenny Woods, Scott Miller, Richard Stearman, and all on the Sidewalk Astronomy Committee. Our education and outreach efforts have earned us nationwide prestige as members of the Nightsky network, partnering us with JPL, NASA, and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.

I just thought you would like to see our plan for 2003-2004 and how it progressed. Thanks you to the board members and chairman Don Tabbutt for their support and to all the members who volunteered hundreds of hours in making this past year a success. YOU ALL HAVE MADE THIS CLUB THE BEST IT HAS EVER BEEN.
