VOICE OF THE PEOPLE

Honor Easement

The Editor, NEW ERA,

On or about 1919, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Crouch, who lived approximately 4 1/2 miles west of Elkton on now U.S. 68 were involved in agreement with the state on a travelers' easement. The easement stated, according to Mrs. Crouch, as meaing and I quote:"You can and will pass through this property without stopping or loitering."

"In other words, keep humping; don't stop. You will leave the property in the same order as you entered. Don't throw or leave anything on it that was or is yours. The state is to maintain and keep up the right-of-way and keep it clear of litter. The state is to maintain the road, culverts and tile and add any other tile if buildings are erected by property owner at no expense to property owner."

Later, the federal government made this highway U.S. 68-80. So it would appear the federal government accepted the same travelers' easement the state already had.

The state engineers today seemed shocked to be informed the state does not own an inch of the right-of-way on the property of the W.H. Crouch estate. They said: "You must have just bought this property."

Ha! Mr. W.H. Crouch moved here when he was 2 years old. He died in 1930 at 73 years of age. His father had owned the farm for some time before moving to it. His father was a merchant in Elkton where J.B. Standard's store was in latter years. His home was where the Piggly Wiggly store is today. The home is behind the store today and owned and occupied by Mr. Wilmont Moore.

Evidently, our governor and his hired help feel they don't have any obligation to honor the terms of the traverlers' easement initiated so long ago. That sounds like the treaty the Indians were given.

Sen. Pat McCuiston may have prestige in Frankfort with his other freeloading friends, but he sure doesn't have any at this household.
