Sarah Crouch 2 (Richard 1)born about 1736 in GoochlandCounty,VA; and died a short time before a July 1818 Cumberland Co., VA per a Chancery case involing an estate settlement. She married Thomas Caldwell on 30 Aug 1756[1] in St. James Northam Parish,Goochland Co.,VA.   Thomas, born circa 1719; died Jan 1787 intestate.

Research by Linda Caldwell (Linda.Caldwell (at) comcast.net) which she shared on 1 May 2018 shows:

Thomas Coldwell is listed in tithe records in 1768, and in property tax records consecutively 1783-1787, followed by widow Sarah in 1790, 1792, 1793. Sons Thomas, Robert, and John start being listed in 1800 and are pretty much consecutive through 1816 (last access to the property records). William is never listed. Thomas’ 1782 Heads of Families listing is not so definitive, but it does show just 10 people. Daughter Sarah, 21 in 1782 was probably out of the house, leaving Thomas, wife Sarah, sons Thomas, Robert, John; daughters Lilias, Jane, Judith, Mary, and Martha. No room for William. AND. The clincher: Thomas’ land was divided some 30 years after his death in an 1818 Chancery case, and William is not in the list of heirs at law (Thomas died intestate). Best guess is that William was lost in the Revolutionary war. It went on from 1775-1783 and William would have been a good age for the military in the latter part of. Ancestry lists one or more William Coldwells. Also could be one of the William Caldwells.

Children

1. William Caldwell born 12 Sep 1759 in St. James Northam Parish, Goochland, Virginia [2]. Linda Caldwell notes: William, son of Thomas and Sarah Crouch Caldwell (s/b COldwell but so often not spelled correctly; or spelled correctly in the records but indexed or transcribed as CA; and, alas, sometimes by a simple conversion of the surname spelling that went unchallenged). Very doubtful that this William is the husband of Esther Buchanan. For starters, his birth year is off from the cemetery record. AND. See Personal Property Tax records for Cumberland County VA.

NOTE:  The William Caldwell who married Esther Buchanan b ABT 1759 on 10 SEP 1787, and died 5 July 1825 in Adair County, Ky. is a different William Caldwell.
Pat Wilson (pwill4(at sign)juno.com), a descendant of a William Crouch and Esther Buchanan has brought into question the marriage of William Crouch Caldwell and Esther Buchanan. See her information below:

A William Caldwell and Ester Buchanan marriage record exists for this date....but - "my" William Caldwell and wife Ester/Esther are not the same line you cite.

William Caldwell (b March 28, 1766 - d June 27, 1832 ) and his wife Ester (b. ca 1768/9 - d. November 27, 1854) are buried at Beaver Dam Cemetery, Elkhorn, Henry County TN. (been there- seen it). I have 5 sons for them: James, William, David, Varner and Preston. Ester can be last found in the 1850 Henry County census (age 81) living with her son Preston.

2. Lilias Lyllia Caldwell b: 2 OCT 1757 in St. James Northam Parish,Goochland,Virginia [2]; died bet 1842 and 1850; never married. Received distribution of Thomas’ Sr.’s estate.

3. Sarah Salley Caldwell b: 11 AUG 1761 in Goochland,St. James Northam,VA. [2] Married Littleberry Scruggs 1780 in St. James Parish, Goochland County, Virginia. She died 1785 in Cumberland County, Va.    Linda Caldwell notes:  Littleberry Scruggs was the son of Henry Scruggs. Littleberry Scruggs died 1793 and she died before property division (1818). She had 2 children who were named in the division – William Scruggs and Lucy Porter Scruggs who had married John Palmore and had child Littleberry Palmore born 1894. Lucy was alive in 1818, but because she had a son, she could not hold title to the division; and underage son Littleberry Palmore was given Littleberry Scruggs as fiduciary for him. Confusing, you bet. Even the Chancery case has strikethroughs. See Virginia Chancery cases on line, Cumberland County.

4. Jane Caldwell b: Abt 1763 in Goochland Co.,VA. Married Charles Palmore. He died 16 Jun 1803 and Jane died 25 Sep 1841 in Cumberland County, VA.    Linda Caldwell notes: Jane  married Charles Palmore (not John; see Sarah) 7 Oct 1785 in Cumberland County, VA,.  Only Caldwell marriage record I found.  Alive 1818 .  Received distribution of Thomas’ Sr.’s estate.

5. Thomas Caldwell b.   Linda Caldwell notes: Thomas married Jenny LNU. Both died before 1818. Sons John Albert and Thomas received distribution.

6. Robert Caldwell b: Abt 1765 in Goochland Co.,VA.   Linda Caldwell notes:  Robert married Nancy? Ann? Mason. Died bet 1840 and 1850 in Cumberland. Received distribution.

7. Judith Caldwell b: Abt 1767 in Goochland Co.,VA. Married Henry Guthrie.

8. Martha Caldwell b: Abt 1769 in Goochland Co.,VA.  Linda Caldwell notes:  Martha never married. Died c 1853. Will on file. Received distribution.

9. John Caldwell b: Abt 1771 in Goochland Co.,VA  Linda Caldwell notes: John never married? Died c 1844. Will on file. Received distribution of Thomas’ Sr.’s estate.

11. James Madison Caldwell  ---  Linda Caldwell notes:  James Madison, born about 1783, died 1793. Buried in Colwell Cemetery, Cumberland County, VA.
