1820 Census, Blacksburg, Montgomery Co., VA shows a Henry and John Lane listed separately. There were seven males living in John's family and one female (wife). Can't tell if this is John and Mary but suspect it may be.
1830 Census Unknown Twp., Montgomery, VA lists a John Lane between 50 - 60 years with wife between 40 - 50 years with w/five sons and one daughter. Previous page states census was taken in Western District of VA.

In 1846 John Lane is listed as a worker on Adam Harman's Road in response to court petitions to improve western lands (Early Adventures of the Western Waters, Vol. 1, copyright 1980; pg 49).
1850 Census Montgomery Co., VA, District 41, pg 22 lists John's occupation as that of "Hatter." He owned real estate valued at $800. John was aged 71 and Mary aged 66.
There is a William Lane listed just beneath John who is age 29. John's son? William 29 Mary 24 John 3 William A.1
