Union Township, page 513 - While there is some division of opinion as to the very first to settle in this township, it is quite certain as to the early land holders. Among those to first enter land in this township were John Mast, Thomas Coppock, John Richardson , Samuel Coate, Moses Coate, John Compton, Jonathan Mote and the Mendenhall's.
Newton Township, page 514 - Moses and Samuel Coate came from South Carolina on a prospecting tour and were subsequently joined by their father, Marmaduke Coate, and the rest of the family. Marmaduke Coate entered land in Section 32 in 1804.
