1870 US Census shows Joseph was 12 and helping on the family farm in Union Township, Miami County, Ohio. He was still attending school.
1900 US Census shows Joseph living in Pleasant Hill with wife Martha and children; Stella age 16. Edith age 11, Nellie age 9, Fred age 6, Eva age 4 and Sarah age 8 months. Conspicuously absent were Edwin and John. This Census Page is dated July, 1900 so, being age 18 and 15 respectively, they might have been working through the summer at another location.
Joseph lists his occupation as house painter -- a trade sons Edwin and John sometimes plied. According to Census all family members, except the preschoolers, could read and write and those old enough had all completed the 8th grade. The home they were living in was rented.
Joseph's father was from South Carolina and his mother was from Ohio.
1902 Piqua City Directory shows Joseph and Martha as head of household at 509 S. Chestnut. Ed and Stella were also living with them at this time.
Joseph was living in Pleasant Hill in 1908 per mother's (Catharine Siler Hall) estate.
Joseph married Martha A. Whitmer, daughter of John Whitmer and Sarah Lenhart, on 24 Dec 1881 in Miami Co., OH.33 (Martha A. Whitmer was born in Nov 1862 in Ohio,37 died in 1954 in Pleasant Hill, OH and was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery 38.)
