Captain David Sherfick Funeral (28 images)

The bagpipes played and the flags flew Friday for Capt. David Sherfick, 40, a fallen Brown Township Fire Department firefighter. It was a clear, sunny day for Sherfick's funeral in the William Curry Auditorium at Mooresville High School. He was killed Monday in a head-on collision with another driver, James Hoskins, 45, of Nashville, who crossed the center line at Mann Road and Ind. 144, according to police reports. Hoskins also was killed in the accident. Sherfick was driving an ambulance for the department at the time. The evasive measures Sherick took helped reserve firefighter Evan Kerkhof, a passenger, survive the crash.
Brown Township Fire Chief Dave Davis said at the funeral if he were to grade Sherfick as a human being and employee, he would have to give him "three Fs - he was a great firefighter, a great friend and a great father."
Sherfick's son, Joel, was presented with the Governor's Medal of Valor by State Fire Marshal Roger Johnson for the evasive actions his father took. Davis said his dedication speech would probably result in tears, so he peppered his speech with "ice breakers," or funny memories of Sherfick. "Dave had his own pace," Davis said, and often "ate pizza three times a day and saved the rest for the next morning." Davis said Sherfick was the "most knowledgeable firefighter I ever knew and an excellent soccer player." When Sherfick was at the station on break and watching a soccer game, everyone knew not to take the TV control away from him, Davis said. Sherfick loved to sing, Davis said, but couldn't sing as well as his wife Leta and son Joel.
