Knight Twp Fire at Herron Ct Fire (22 images)
On May 17th at 16:45, Knight Township Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at Herron Ct. Before anyone arrived on scene it was obvious that a serious fire was under way. Mutual aide from the Suburban Fire Association and Newburgh was requested. First in engine found a  building of 12 apartments fully involved near the middle of the structure and with a common attic the fire was spreading rapidly. Unfortunately, the first hydrant used was not working. Incoming engines started drafting from a nearby lake while others laid lines from the trunk line near Green River Rd. At first all residence were accounted for, but later it was found that one of the occupants of the apartment where the fire originated was missing and later found in the fire site. With the winds, the fast start and spread of the fire most of the building suffered some damage either from the fire, smoke or water. Considering that the residence are all senior citizens it could have been a disaster if it had occurred over night when everyone was in bed.
