Entry
Fee:
$15.00 - solo. $20.00
- duet ($10.00 for each participant)
Guidelines: The
student’s age as of Nov. 1 of the contest year will determine the age category
for solos. For duets, the age of the older
partner determines the age category for the event.
Each age category will include students of various ability levels.
The judges will be instructed to consider the difficulty of pieces according to
the length of time the student has studied.
This should be reflected on their scores.
Students
must play the two selections listed on their entry form.
Any changes in piece selections must be approved by the
contest chairman, and a new form is to be typed by the teacher and sent
to the chairman no later than one week before the
contest. No changes or substitutions are allowed on contest day.
Students
will provide to the judge a clean edition of the published score with the
measures numbered. No photocopies
are
allowed. Any student
presenting photocopied music without the written permission of the publisher
will be disqualified.
All
teachers who have students participating in the competition are asked to work on
the contest day. Teachers will
receive their work assignment prior to the contest
day, and should report to the tab room at 8:00 a.m. on contest day.
Audiences
are not allowed in the audition rooms. Exception:
In the 7 & younger age category, a parent or adult guardian may

Piano
Solo: Students are to play from memory the scale and cadence in the key
of each solo. If both pieces are in
the same key, choose a different scale for the second
solo and list on the entry form. (Example:
key:C, playing G) Scales and cadences are to
be appropriate for the length of time studying piano. Beginners may play a 5-finger pattern (pentascale) and a
tonic chord in place of complete scales and cadences.
Two
memorized pieces by different composers, exhibiting a variety of contrasting
styles and techniques, are to be performed.
Both
pieces should represent the same level of musicianship.
Repeats may be omitted,
at the discretion of the teacher.
Primary and elementary level pieces must be at least 16 measures in
length. Only original music is permissible. No arrangements,
transcriptions, hymns, folk songs, pop tunes or compositions written by
the performer are allowed.
Piano
Duet: Two pieces by different composers/arrangers, exhibiting a variety
of musical techniques, are to be performed.
Two copies of
original music are needed, one for the students and one for the judge.
A page turner will be provided. If
one duet partner is
unable to participate, a teacher may substitute, and the student
will receive comments and a certificate of participation.
Entry
Forms: Each teacher will receive one copy of the current solo and duet
evaluation sheets. Teachers should
make the necessary copies
needed for their studio (on white 8 ½ x 11” paper).
The judge will fill out the one form submitted for each duet.
The teacher is to
copy the sheet after the contest, so that each duet partner will have an
evaluation sheet.
All
entry forms must be typed, and all information must
be accurately and completely filled in.
Only current year forms will
be
accepted. Use the assigned teacher
number on all entry forms. The teacher’s name or studio name must not appear
on
any entry forms. Teachers may indicate, with a post-it note on the
entry form, any scheduling conflicts.
Every effort will be made
to accommodate such requests.
Students’
performance times and room numbers will be sent to
the teachers as soon as scheduling is completed.

same judge in order to be eligible for a
trophy.
The
top three Gold Medal scores in each age group will receive a trophy.
Groups with 10 or more entries will receive 3 trophies; 7-9 entries - 2 trophies; 5-6 entries - 1 trophy.
Age groups with less than 5 entries will be combined with another age
group, in order that all participants be eligible for a trophy and honors recital.
Honors
Recital:
All trophy winners will play one of
their winning selections in an Honors Recital, held the day after the contest.
The
trophies will be presented during this program.
Teachers are encouraged to attend and invite their students
and
parents. The Honors Recital is an
exciting event, and is very motivational.
Printed
programs will include both pieces. All
performers are to report to the Recital Chairman 15 minutes prior to the recital
to
confirm which piece they will play.
