THE 42d Royal Highland Regiment
GRENADIER COMPANY

"The lads from Hell from wherever they want to be"
The Highland Regiment was first comprised of six independent companies raised in 1775 of loyal clansmen. These six companies were charged with controlling the highland clans from in fighting and enforcing the disarming of the highland clans.
This "watching" of the highlands as well as, the dark colour of their tartan gave them the name "The Black Watch".
In 1739 by order of King George 4 more companies were raised and the whole formed into the 43d Regiment of Foot.
In 1751 The Regiment was renumbered the 42d and given a royal designation thus becoming The 42d Royal Highland Regiment "The Gallant 42".
The original Grenadier Company, under the command of Captain/lt. John Peebles arrived in New York harbor in July of 1776 aboard the H.M.S. Thames. We represent the Grenadier Company of the 42d Royal Highland Regiment as they would have appeared in winter camp, New York, October 1776.

The Burning cross was a traditional signal that clan chiefs would erect on the hillsides as a signal to gather together the Highland clans for purposes of going to war or to discuss important information.
Today this is the name of a newsletter for our members for the same purpose.
