According to a 2000 survey, 472,813 reports of elder abuse were made in the United States during the most recent year for which data was available. And as the population ages, elder abuse is expected to become an even bigger problem.

___________

Increasingly, the "golden years" are streaked with "golden tears," as the elderly fall prey to unscrupulous caregivers, nursing home personnel, scams...and even their own family members! It is time that maltreatment of the elderly is exposed as a despicable act of cowardice. It is time that we open our eyes and refuse to shut our hearts to the pain that the elderly experience at the hands of those entrusted with their care.

The elderly have a right to a safe environment, and we have a moral responsibility to prevent them from merely being easy prey. Those who helped to build this country and fought for our freedom, should not be reduced to living in fear throughout their "golden years." The United States routinely aids the oppressed in other countries. It is now time for us to look introspectively and recognize our own transgressions. It is time that Americans make a stand and end Elder Maltreatment!
