Causes
Misery's Fence and Love and Light Radio proudly support the following causes:
AFSP
I discovered this organization while attempting to heal from my husband's suicide. The AFSP combines outreach to the suicidal and mentally ill, with resources and support for the bereaved.
Out of the Darkness
Community walks to raise money for the AFSP, as well as awareness for this cause.
The Farm Sanctuary
The Farm Sanctuaries--one in NY, one in CA--provide a safe haven for rescued farm animals, coordinate political efforts to pass anti-cruelty laws, promote a vegetarian diet, and provide education for the public.
Mercy for Animals
A somewhat more radical animal-rights group, promoting awareness of the plight of food and lab animals, and encouraging veganism as a step towards compassion.
Soldiers' Angels
Whatever your personal/political feelings are regarding war, we all want our service men and women home, SAFE and SOON. Soldiers' Angels provides support (letters, care packages, etc.) for our troops as well as outreach to the families left behind.
Obsessive Compulsive Foundation
After my older daughter was diagnosed with OCD, I found this organization to be a Godsend of medical information and resources for help. Fortunately, my daughter was misdiagnosed, but my heart retains compassion for those who truly do suffer from this disorder.
Friends
Misery's Fence and Love and Light Radio proudly patronize these local businesses:
Yesterday's Cafe and Tea Room
My favorite respite from a busy day! Owner Susan Schultz and her staff make this the most relaxing and welcoming restaurant in Florence. My older daughter and I try to meet there as often as possible for brunch, and are always in awe of the excellent homemade food and delicious variety of teas. Whether you stop in for a full formal tea, an elegant brunch, or just to grab a cup of coffee and a muffin, you will NOT be disappointed! Be sure to check out the gift shop, too! (My daughter's favorite Christmas present every year is a gift certificate!)
Urban Active
OK, I'll admit, with my hectic schedule (and injured knee) you're not likely to see me working out at the former Gold's Gym as much as I used to. If you, like my younger daughter, prefer a solitary workout, there are treadmills and ellipticals and stairclimbers and more, plus free weights and machines. Plug your headset into the TV screen, or watch a movie while you work out in the Cardio Theater. If you're more like me and prefer a group workout, be sure to try my favorites--Spinning, Yoga, and Urban Iron. The instuctors and trainers are knowledgeable and friendly and ready to help you meet your health and fitness goals.
Lifepath Center
This fabulous family-owned and run holistic healing center is amazing! The atmosphere is relaxing, yet subtly energizing at the same time. Therapeutic massage, Yoga, Tai Chi, drumming circles, dance--Wanda and her wonderful family offer many forms of healing and relaxation to choose from.
Healthy Alternative
The friendly and knowledgeable staff makes this one of our favorite stores in Florence. Whether you're looking for homeopathic remedies, vitamins, organic produce, natural health/beauty supplies, or healthy treats, this place has it all!
Jungle Jim's
This is hands-down the most awesome store in Cincinnati! (Well, technically it's in Fairfield...) When I have out-of-town guests that I take out to do cool and tourist-y stuff, I get plenty of odd looks at first--"You're taking us to a grocery store??" Jungle Jim's is WAAAAAAY beyond "grocery store" status! Acres (literally) of authentic, imported international foods (including produce that you'll never find at your local grocer), cheeses, wine, Amish baked goods, meats (ewww, but in all fairness I have to mention this), a beer selection like none other, AISLES of hot sauces (my dad's favorite part!), sushi bar, salsa bar, olive bar, health food section, cookware, cooking demonstrations and classes...all in a fun and friendly atmosphere. It's not just a trip to the grocery--it's an international experience!
Boone County Farmers Market
Fresh-picked fruits and veggies, flowers, herbs, honey, baked goods--from mid-April through Christmas. Farm-fresh goodness brought to you by the Boone County Cooperative Extension Office, in turn brought to you by my alma mater, the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture. Regardless of where you live, it's always a good thing to support your local farmers, encourage organic farming, and leave a smaller carbon footprint on the Earth.
