Games FAQ

Common

Q: How does the processor speeds of the systems compare to each other.

A: PlayStation 2: 300 MHz, Xbox: 733 MHz, Gamecube: 405 MHz, Dreamcast: 200 MHz , PlayStation: 33.86 MHz, PlayStation Portable: 333 MHz

Q: Which systems support digital audio?

A: Both the PS2 and the Xbox support digital audio.  The PS2 has a optical connection built in, for the Xbox you have to buy the Advanced or High Definition AV Pack to get an optical output.

Q: Which consoles play DVDs?

A: The PS2 and the Xbox play DVDs the Gamecube does not, a DVD wouldn't even fit in the slot.  The PS2 plays DVDs right out-of-the-box with the PS2 controller or any remote that is compatible with Sony DVD players.  To play DVDs on the Xbox you have to buy the DVD remote.

PS2

Q: Which is better the composite, S-video or component connection?

A:  The component is the best with the S-video in a close second and the composite in a distance third.  I wouldn't even use the RF connection if your wondering about that one.

Q: Does the PS2 have Dolby Digital?

A: Yes and No.  The PS2 when playing DVD movies supports both Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound.  When playing games the PS2 only support DTS and Dolby Pro Logic in games.  Why you ask?  That's a good question I haven't been able to find an answer to, but when I do I'll post it.

Q: Does the PS2 support Hi-Def games?

A: No, with one exception.  Somehow Polyphonic Digital found a way to make GT4 run in 1080i.  The PS2 does support progressive scan games, which is 480p, and is enhanced definition not Hi-Def.

Q: Is the PS2 compatible with the PS1?

A:  Yes the PS2 is fully compatible with all PS1 software and hardware.  The only limitations is that PS1 hardware may only work with PS1 software.  PS2 memory cards and multi-taps do not work with PS1 games.  Though you can backup your PS1 games onto a PS2 memory card.

Q: What games are widescreen?

A:  The GTA series, Grand Turismo, God Of War, Tekken 5, Star Ocean, Ratchet and Clank II, and some Crash Bandicoot games as well as others.

Xbox

Q: Does the Xbox support Hi-Def?

A:  Yes the Xbox supports both 720p and 1080i as well as 480p which is enhanced definition.  About half of all Xbox games are either 480p/720p/1080i.

Q: Does the Xbox have widescreen games?

A:  Dead or Alive 3, F1 2001, Madden as well as others.

Q: Do I need a memory card with my Xbox?

A: No all games save to the hard drive.  You can transfer some games via a memory card to a friends Xbox.

Q: I heard the Xbox runs on Windows is this true?

A: The Xbox runs on a stripped down version of the Windows 2000 kernel that is less then 500k in size.  Too bad Windows couldn't be that way.

Q: What size hard drive does the Xbox have?

A: The earl models had an 8 Gig drive and newer Xboxes have 10 Gig hard drives.
