Ultra Magnus is the sum total of the former minicon Ultra, and the Autobot Magnus, and to a lesser degree whoever else makes up his lower torso. Ultra Magnus is also the result of compromise. While the Magnus component exerts a fair amount of will in this form, it is Ultra who truly has sway over the combined Autobot’s actions. It is in this mode that Ultra had placed his hope for a “bigger” and thus safer life. No longer to be walked on, or ignored by larger robots, Ultra feels more respected and powerful as Ultra Magnus. This has also turned into a relative amount of arrogance. However, Magnus is able to keep this emotion in check to a certain degree, but there are also times that Ultra Magnus appears to contradict Optimus Prime’s orders. In reality, Ultra resents being told what to do after becoming so much “more” than what he was, but still defers to Magnus due to his battlefield experience. Ultra Magnus is a superb Field Commander, and exercises confidence, and competence in his battlefield decisions. He is also faster in action than Magnus alone.
Ultra Magnus cannot become the lower torso of a Duo-bot. It is not that he lacks the capability, but it is part of a shell program that Ultra wrote to prevent Magnus from combining without him. Ultra will neither allow himself, nor his created body for Magnus to be relegated to “low stature,” or prevented from being able to make decisions. In emergency situations, he did allow for Magnus’ single-bot mode head to become Ultra Magnus’ head, but only when Ultra himself is badly damaged, or absent. At times Magnus resents this control over himself, but acknowledges that Ultra essentially saved his life. Magnus also understands how powerless the minicon felt against Decepticons like Megatron. The bianary bonding allows for each one’s emotions to be conveyed as if they were a part of one larger mind…. They also feel each other’s pain (and joy). While Magnus is individually very powerful, Ultra Magnus is more powerful still than average Duo-bots. Ultra’s minicon energy directly coursing into the combined robot form also has the effect of supercharging Ultra Magnus.
