Factions: The Navy
"Without a decisive naval force we can do nothing definitive, and with it, everything honorable and glorious."
-- Vashton Jeore,
7th Chancellor of
the Republic
Officers
Fleet
Admiral
Fleet Admirals are the top level of the Navy command structure. Although
they technically outrank Admirals, they are rarely able to exert that rank
to it's fullest because they are typically busy with the Republic Senate,
the Chancellor, and Strategic Command. The Navy itself is incapable of promoting
anyone to this rank, it may only happen with the consent of the Senate (usually
nominated by the Chancellor.)
Admiral
Admirals command fleets. Many are in control of personal flagships,
and most, if not all, of the heaviest capital ships are in their personal
control. An Admirals ship is known as a Flag Ship. These are the individuals
that wield ultimate military authority when on the frontline. Admirals are
personally responsible for the success or failure of all strategic military
decisions within their region of space.
Commodore
The primary difference between a Captain and a Commodore, is that a Commodore
is likely to also command personnel not immediately in contact with him or
his ship, such as support ships and captains of other vessels. Additionally,
Commodore fleet sizes are limited in comparison to the firepower at the disposal
of an admiral.
Captain
In the Navy, Captain is a high rank indeed. At this level, you are expected
to think not only tactically, but strategically. According to the Naval Code
of Operations all capital ships must be commanded by someone bearing the rank
of captain. This is considered one of the most prestigious military ranks
within the Republic.
Commander
A Commander is a man who has truly proven himself as an officer. He may command
not only many personnel, but his command is likely to be more general, i.e.
not just the people who perform one specific function.
Lieutenant
Most men and women of this rank have similar duties to Ensigns, but are given
wider lattitude in self-direction. You may command a significant number of
personnel.
Ensign
You recently graduated from a branch campus of the Galactic Naval Academy.
(While there, you were known as a Cadet, which has no rank whatsoever.) Ensigns
are rarely given any command at all, but they are assigned significant duties.
*NOTE: On rare occasions, a non-commisioned officer who has passed the required
interviews and testing requirements can be promoted to Ensign.
Non-Commisioned Officers
Warrant
Officer
Unlike a regular officer, you are a specialist in a technical field. You may
command men or vessels or you may not, it all depends on your chosen expertise.
Promotion to warrant officer is actually more rare than from chief petty officer
to ensign.
Chief
Petty Officer
You might be in charge of a repair bay, train recruits, or command an entire
subsection of a ship.
Petty
Officer
Very likely you are a clerk or an assistant to another NCO or Warrant Officer.
You sometime direct the activities of small groups of enlisted men.
Enlisted Personnel
Master
Crewman
Because of a high level of competence or frequent performance above the stand
expectations for your posting, you have been given a rating that is considered
to show a higher level of excellence than is expected from a standard crewman
assigned to a similar posting.
Crewman
Duties vary. You and your fellow Crewman comprise the bulk of the Navy. Without
you no ships would fly. Thank goodness for the service droids which elevate
your lot greatly. You do what is too important for the droids to handle, yet
to mundane or little for those above you.
Recruit
You've just signed up! After you complete your
4 month training at a naval facility, you will spend 2 months on a real navy
vessel or working facility, which you will most likely be stationed at or
on for the remainder
of your first enlistment.
Basic
Nature of Recruits
The Deep Space Fleet is one of the
most frequently seen aspects of the Republic across the Expansion Region.
Over time this has created a strange melding of people who, while very different
individually, show the galaxy the amazing potiential it has to offer. Recruits
from the Expansion Region join as a sign of honor and strength, while also
gaining valuable experience and training that might not otherwise be available
to them. Recruits from the Core Worlds typically join for very different reasons,
two above all others. The first is family tradition, to follow in such a line
will eventually open up opportunities that would otherwise never avail themselves
to the potential officer. The other Core Worlds reason is one of rebellion.
A young man or woman might not be able to stand up to face their family to
say no openly, but when they show up in uniform holding contracts of service,
the break away from family and past is often complete.
New member worlds are the one other
frequent source of military recruits, especially warrior cultures. One of
the most common traits exibited by the mariad races of the cosmos is their
desire to learn what is beyond their border. To gain this insight, many young
aliens have signed contracts of service for the sole purpose of meeting those
new alien cultures, to see sights none of their species has seen before. At
times this can prove distressing for an ill prepared officer, but more often
it provides a new perspective that can be very important during a crisis situation.
Commanding
a Ship
When asked why they join the Deep Space
Fleet, a recruit almost always has his eye on a single goal, and its the most
prestigious role wthin the navy. To Be an Officer of the Line. Line Officer
is a title granted to anyone in command of a capital ship. This is an important
duty, and anyone able to earn such a posting must have proven themselves to
be a competent officer. Even an officer commanding a lowly transit barge hauling
components from shipyard to shipyard feels a sense of pride in the service
they perform and the men they have under their command. A common joke within
the admiralty is that there is a running tie between 1,200 ships for the distinction
of "Finest Crew in the Fleet".
Because of the honor and importance
the navy places with command of a ship, it is naval tradition that all ships
be commanded by an officer regardless of ship classification. Shuttles, fighters,
blast-boats; all are assigned an officer of at least the rank of ensign to
command them. To signify the difference though between the two types of command
posts, Line Officers are given an additional distinction. All officers who
command a capital ship are given the title of Captain while on ship. In this
way, a commander who is charged with a corvette is acknowledged the superior
of a commander who leads a fighter squadron. Both are important duties, but
the navy feels that commanding a 800 is more important than five.
Jedi
within the Fleet
Jedi have
no official standing within the ranking system of the navy. Non-comissioned
officers typically defer to them and a crewman will do as one instructs unless
it countermands an order given by an officer within the military heirarchy.
A padawan is normally treated as an ensign. They are both viewed as competent
and prepared, but still largely untested by the universe. A full jedi knight
is normally viewed as an equal in ability to a commander. They are well trained
and able to handle a leadership position during times of crisis. Jedi masters
are highly respected by all, even the line officers and those who control
the military command structure. Given the nature of a master's training and
normal life experience they are considered the equal of a commodore and a
ship's captain would normally be very reluctant to ignore the request of a
Jedi Master. Members of the Jedi Council are viewed as admirals. These individuals
are slow to flex their power within the military, but when required none would
disobey them without direct orders from a ranking admiral or fleet admiral.
It is possible that if a jedi council member used this ability without proper
thought they could be brought before the senate or military review board,
but in all the history of the Republic, this has yet to happen.
It is possible for a jedi to join
the military, either by requesting the assignment or temporarily leaving the
order and signing a recruitment contract with the navy itself. In the later
case though, it is rare for the military to accept such a recruit without
first getting word from the jedi council as to the individual's past and suitability
for membership within the fleet. There have been knights who served as captains,
and even a few have achieved the rank of admiral during their career. Still,
the Republic Senate is reluctant to promote a jedi to the rank of Fleet Admiral,
such cross influence is thought be too dangerous for Republic security. Though
none have ever said such things aloud.

Hadry "Madcap" Mabcama
|
Born
and raised in a CorSec family, it always felt as if Hadry's first word
was duty and his second was heritage. He was to grow
up, study hard at the university and file for application into the Corellian
Security Bureau . His father had, his grandfather, his mother, it went
back over eleven generations. Hadry didn't want that life. Their life.
Instead, when he was eighteen he lied to his parents about a school
trip to Coruscant. Instead of going with his class on the graduation
excursion, he signed onto a tramp freighter, working for passage all
the way to Alderaan. When he arrived he hitched half way across the
planet just so that he could petition for entry into the Alderaan Academy
of the Fleet. Hadry was going to be a fighter pilot. |
