Droids
The real problem
is not whether machines think but whether men do.

Galactic
Bots,
mechanoids, simulants, automotons. These are just a few of the local names
for what the galaxy collectively knows as droid. Mobile mechanized systems
powered by an AI computer system. Over the lifespan of the Republic droids
have undergone many changes. At one point in the distant past, an unknown
species of alien had created the AI mainfraim that was the heart of the Droid
Nexus; one of the first challenges to the burgeoning Republic. After that
bloody conflict, the mechanical men almost completely ceased to exist. It
a great deal of time before men could bring themselves to trust these servants
again.
The types and designs now in use
are far less advanced than those made by the Nexus and need far more frequent
maintenance. Someday they could become commonplace in every facet of galactic
life, they might even become the equals of the organics they serve. But in
this time, in this place, they are tools to be used and watched with a close
eye.
There are several models of droids currently available. Most are used for industrial automation or as crude assistants for more complicated tasks, while others are programmed to offer basic tutoring or advisory services to families; a few models have even been employed as sentries. What follows is a small sampling of the many types of droids that can be found throughout the gallaxy.

Duwani
8G4-AT Sentry Droid Fast becoming one of Duwani's more popular military lines, the 8G4-AT is a versatile combat drone. It moves by using 10 "spider legs" that are carefully positioned all the way around its circular body. Each leg is built with a miniature electromagnet and a universal adhesive/solvent projector. The combination of leg placement and its ability to adhere to any surface for brief periods allows the 8G4-AT to cross any form of terrain, even scaling walls and other near vertical surfaces. These droids are seeing more and more use throughout the expansion region because so many companies are worried that the organic guard hired might in fact be a spy working for some criminal gang, or worse, another corporation. As sales continue to grow Duwani has begun to increase production and even offer more specialized and modular designs to better fit a clients exact needs; for an additional fee of course. What is not normally seen in the Duwani sales brochure are the warnings about failure to keep them properly maintained. If a technician does not update and run a full diagnostic at least once a week there is the chance that the 8G4-AT can begin to misclassify potential targets. There is one well concealed report that tells of an entire research staff being gunned down by their own droid while the thief that triggered the reaction successfully stole the company's classified datafiles. |

Cyber-Metaversal
DR3-JDI Combat Training Droid This droid was actually designed by a jedi artificer working with Cyber-Metaversal. It is designed to test a jedi's lightsaber skill against adaptive opponents. The only portion of the jedi order to adopt general usage of these droids are the battlemasters. Most others seem to think that the DR3-JDI is an accident waiting to happen. There has been no known incident where one of these droids has caused serious harm, and its internal diagnostic and maintenance tracking programs remove the most dangerous aspects. Still, most jedi prefer to train against other pupils or enter through the candle cadences. Each DR3-JDI comes equipped with lightsaber built into its right hand (it does come with instructions and an additional hand so that the owner can switch which hand has the lightsaber). Because it knows the weapon itself and is opperating off a series of programs designed around its own particular blade, the weapon is easier for the droid to use. The difficulty goes up one level though if it goes more than one week without routine maintenance. If a second week of maintenance is skipped, the lightsaber shuts down and cannot be reactivated until the droid has undergone a full diagnostic routine. |
