Aliens: Exotic RACES

"If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that."
      --- Last Words of
      Prince Ang Nuur
  Last of the Gwa'eir

There are countless intelligent species throughout the galaxy. Some, like the Duros and Bith are encountered frequently at the many space ports of the galaxy. Others, like the Star Dragons, are so rare that some think them more myth than reality. Every year the Republic Academy of Xenobiology adds a dozen new races to its list of sapient beings, without even a hint that the galaxy might be running out of new ones.
Not all the races will fare the same over the span of the universe, some will continue to expand until they eventually live on half a hundred worlds, others will dwindle away. Some slowly due to the harsh forces of time and nature, others will go out in the span of a heartbeat, be it for natural causes or something far more sinister. When you travel out into the maelstrom that is the Galactic Republic don't take all the exotic sights for granted, for when you want to see them most, they may be no more.

Gavreeni

The Gavreeni are a slender race that is only slightly shorter than the average human. Most of their body is covered in a short, soft fur with color ranging from rust-red to charcoal black; often with intricate spot or stripe patterns naturally occuring throughout it. Only their hands, faces, and feet lack the fur. Speaking with high-pitched, voices in a languages that sounds as much like song as it does actual talking. Many find the sound of Gavreeni conversation to be very soothing.
Born on on the lush forest planet Galizora, the lack of advanced predators and large herd mammals allowed the Gavreeni to flourish in a safe environment. Because of the amazing ease at which food and shelter could be provided by their world, the Gavreeni never advanced certain mental traits that allowed other races to advance beyond the simple tribal life that fit the Gavreeni so well.

When a Republic scout first discovered their homeworld over seven centuries ago, the smallish race took in the strange visitor with little hesitation and shared what they new of their world with him. Trade was soon established with the many large tribes spread across the planet. It took little time for the Gavreeni to adapt to the galactic technology they were exposed to. It turned out that the Gavreeni have an advanced aptitude for problem solving and theory modification making them some of the better scientists in their region of space once the Gavreeni became an educated race. Since that simple time, the Gavreeni have quickly spread out into the galaxy, blissfully unaware of the dangers that await them outside their safe environment.
The only problem that has hurt the Gavreeni in the centuries since their expanding into the galactic body is their trust in others and lack of understanding about what some of their ideas can be used for. The most infamous of which is the ore processor drill that was commissioned by a pirate captain. It allowed for quick boarding of prizes and even created a vacuum seal so that a passage was instantly made for the invading crew. Incidents such as this often leads the Republic Science Bureau to keep a close eye on Gavreeni inventors, so that the most dangerous of tools and makeshift weapons don't fall into the wrong hands.

Thraeka

The Thraeka are an insectoid race. Their outer carapice varies in color from deep brown through a medium shade of green. Their body is divided up into 11 complex segments, each with small reduntant organs allowing them to remain active when most other races would be incapacitated. They have four sets of limbs, all with what humans would consider fine manipulators; combined with their greater flexibility, this makes the Thraeka a potent race in combat.
Thraeka first arrived in Galactic Space during what is now called the Thraeka Incursions. It was a minor, if harsh, invasion of four Republic Worlds in an attempt to extend their rapidly depleting mineral and food resources. The insect race met with a strong defense that eventually led to the collapse of their world government and near extinction for the entire race. Only the last minute intervention by the Republic Deep Space Fleet kept them all from starving to death.
When the crisis was over the Thraeka pledged themselves to the Republic's service. They wished to repay the debt the only way they knew how. With combat and skill. They are now considered to be an associate member of the Republic and are working hard to become full and proper galactic citizens, unfortunately their rightfully earned reputation as willing cannibals had made associations with other species tense at the best of times.

While most of the Thraeka are now stunch supporters of the Republic, there is a small subculture that feels the galactic body is attempting to destroy their racial identity. This has led to a quiet, but growing movement of quasi-peaceful rebellion. The most violent aspects of this group often leave their homeworld and form mercenary bands, accepting credit or intelligent food as payment. Unfortunately the mercenary portion has stained the peaceful sect of the rebellion so much that none within Galactic Society feel sympathy for them.
