down. Scout reports seeing a Horseman. Uglúk smears ointment on Merry’s
forehead and forces down an orc-draught to wake him. Both hobbits’ leg
bindings are cut and they are forced to run.

hobbits,
changing off carriers.

the Wold rise on

Reach Isengard –
Treebeard, hobbits and a few other ents hide near the gate
of Isengard. Shortly after midnight, Saruman’s army marches forth: at
least
10,000. Took over an hour. Many Huorns follow. Ents attack walls of
Isengard. Quickbeam almost catches Saruman. After burning of one ent,
Treebeard halts the attack.

Mar. 3 – Day 8: 0 miles

Merry and Pippin wander all around outside the circle of
Isengard. Ents
gathering the waters of the Isen. At dusk Treebeard returns. Gandalf
arrives.
Hobbits learn of the Battle of Helm’s Deep. Treebeard warns them to
avoid
the gates and tunnel. At midnight the Ents break the dams they built.
Isengard
is flooded.

Mar. 4 – Day 9: 0 miles

Merry and Pippin climb up a stair to the walls. During the day
the Ents return
the Isen to its channel. Waters start to recede.

Wormtongue arrives (ca. 9 a.m.). Treebeard sends him to
Orthanc. Merry and
Pippin find the store-room above the gate. Aragorn and others arrive
with
Théoden and Gandalf (ca. noon). After eating, they ride to Orthanc.
Confrontation with Saruman.
