On our trip around the downs, we've come to a "...deep dike with a steep wall on the further
side." Tom Bombadil told the hobbits that this had been the boundary line of one of the kingdoms of old. It's interesting to imagine the great civilization of the Men of the Westernesse here, centuries ago.
We'll walk through a gap in the old wall and then turn nearly due north toward the Great
East Road. Watch your step as you cross that dike!
