110-114 Miles
This part of our trip will take us to one of the ancient burial barrows. Our visit won't be as
hazardous for us as it was for Merry, Pippin, Sam and Frodo because the wight that haunted this particular barrow was exorcised by Tom Bombadil!
When the hobbits awoke from their unexpected nap, it was sunset and getting foggy. They
became lost and separated in the fog and instead of skirting the Barrow Downs, they wandered right into the midst of them. They spent the night of September 28 as the
unconscious prisoners of a Barrow-wight. Hopefully we'll sleep a bit more comfortably (and safely) tonight!
The Barrow in which they were imprisoned now lies open and empty. It is sad, but a bit
intriguing, nonetheless. Still, it's good to turn our backs to this place and resume our march. Onward toward the Great East Road!
