Facts About The USS Charles Ausburne




      1. On Navy Day, 27 October 1945, the AUSBURNE will have been in commission 35 months, 28 of which were spent in the Pacific. She has steamed a total of 207,000 nautical miles and has consumed 10,686,305 gallons of fuel oil.
      2. The AUSBURNE has traveled east to Gibraltar at 5° W. longitude, west to Leyte Gulf at 125° E. longitude, north to Casco Bay, Maine at 43° N. latitude, and south to Sydney, Australia at 43° S. latitude.
      3. The AUSBURNE has crossed the International Date Line 4 times and the Equator 16 times.
      4. The AUSBURNE has visited four continents; North America; Africa; Europe and Australia; 32 islands; and 8 ports in the United States.
      5. The AUSBURNE has assisted in amphibious landings at the following places; New Georgia, Green Island, Vella LaVella, Emirau, Lingayen Gulf, Mindoro, Negros, Mindinao, Panay, Iheya Shima and Aguni Shima.
      6. The AUSBURNE has been subjected to enemy shore gunfire six times and was never hit. Shrapnel landed on the deck once.
      7. The AUSBURNE has rescued 10 survivors of planes forced down at sea.
      8. The AUSBURNE has picked up 31 Japanese prisoners from the water.
      9. At Mindinao, P.I., the AUSBURNE picked up an Army Lieutenant who had worked with the Guerrilla Forces in the Islands during the entire Japanese occupation.
      10. The AUSBURNE has lost no men in combat and has suffered only one minor casualty.
      11. The AUSBURNE has conducted 32 fueling operations at sea.
      12. The AUSBURNE has served with the First, Third, Fifth, Seventh, and Ninth Fleets.
      13. The AUSBURNE has gone to General Quarters (Complete readiness for battle) 780 times.
      14. The AUSBURNE has been in three typhoons in the Okinawa area, suffering no casualties.
      15. The AUSBURNE has fired 14,902 rounds of 5" /38 cal. projectiles, 22,020 rounds of 40 MM and 22,035 rounds of 20 MM ammunition. Fired 10 torpedoes and dropped 12 depth charges.
