Project Behemoth

Part 2: Aftermath

Day 1

Well this is the continuation of my mod, and from here on out it wil be mostly small updates. Ive got until november 3rd to finish up on my case before the next LAN. Hopefully there will be contests, and I might win the "highest Geiger count award" or something :P

My modded LCD

Here is the how to for my modded LCD:

Parts List

  • A ccfl neon or uv light system. ( can be what ever, just has to be able to fit on your lcd and go on 5 or 12 volts. ie.LED's)
  • 3 molex1 adapers 2 female2, 1 male3 you should have at least one female and maybe 1 male connector already on your ccfl. Also most fans come with the same thing. You could also buy a molex y connector form your local computer vendor.
  • Hot glue gun w/ hot glue
  • Cable Ties (not needed but reccomended)
  • Speaker Wire (a little longer than your monitors vga/dvi cable.)
  • An LCD (make sure your LCD is big enough to put your ccfls on the sides. 17 inch or above reccomended)

Lets Start!!

1.Cut the 2 wires connecting the ccfl inverter, and its switch to the molex, directly where it connects to the molex. Make sure to note which lead is positive, and which one is negative, and what colors they were connected too.(refer to pic 1)
2.Hook up speakerwire to the 2 leads. Make sure to mark which one is positive and neg on both sides. (ususally the wire has a color strip to tell you which on it is.)
3.Hook up the other end to the female molex2 you just cut off. Make sure you follow the voltages right. (ccfls usually use 12v so you would use black and yellow - and +)
4.Test your wiring on an old power supply or on your own computer if your confident enough.
5.If sucessfull, hot glue your ccfls as well as your inverter to the back or where ever on your LCD. Also put the switch somewhere to the side of the LCD or easy access.
6.If you want managed cables, cable tie your speaker cable to your dvi, and give it some slack at the end so it can reach one of the bottom ports.
7.Now if you dont already have one get a female to male molex connector, and put it through an unused exspansion slot. plug the female end in your comp's molex, and the male to your lcd ccfl's. You can also use your ccfl's switch plate as a molex adapter plate.
