CORUSCANT CUSTOMS
Figure by:

With
the construction of out new Jabba's Palace diorama underway, I am
having to create characters that have never been sold at retail.
While some characters can be made using parts from other figures,
others have to be made from scratch. As an example of the later, I
present to you, out faithful Coruscant tourists, Bubo (frog-dog). |

|
Good
ol' Bubo, whose name sounds strangely Hobbitish, is crafted completely
out of super sculpy. The fangs are actually shaved Lego figure
hair pieces. After baking the sculpy figure I applied 6
different acrylic paint layers to give Bubo the right color and
shading. |

After
painting my lil frog-dog, I applied a gloss medium to the lips/mouth
to give a slippery, drool like texture. Finally I created a
harness out of painted canvas and crazy glue. |

In picture
to the left you can see the harness, with attached chain for his Jawa
handler. I used the chain from the Tusken Raider w/ Massif to
complete the harness. |

This
picture really captures my Bubo, in all his drooling, bug-eyes,
reptilian glory! This picture was taken in the Hasbro cardboard
Jabba's Palace diorama. I promise, our Diorama will look much
better =). Below is a short history of Bubo, courtesy of

The
bubo is a bulbous two-legged brownish reptile of about forty centimeters
in diameter. Its most striking feature is wide maw filled with thin,
sharp, needle-like teeth. The shape of the teeth does not seem sturdy
enough to gnaw large active struggling prey. Rather, they seem better
suited to catching and impaling prey which is slippery or wriggles;
perhaps fishlike creatures. The shape of the mouth and head suggests
that these would need to be smaller animals, able to be swallowed
whole.
This notion is supported by the relevent sections of Tales from
Jabba's Palace, which say:
Bubo knew he
was being used ... They, along with most of the universe, looked
upon his kind as nothing more than drooling, mindless, bug-eating
frog-dogs ... a reputation which the species did nothing to correct.
The Bubo story in
the anthology, Tongue-tied: Bubo's Tale, indicates that
this species is semi-intelligent, or at least believe themselves so,
despite the fact that they have no means of vocal communication, no
manipulative appendages or technology. In fact, the Bubo, in this
story regards itself as a highly refined mind, although its antics
show no evidence of anything other than the impulses of a rather
bad-tempered dog-like mind.
