Diorama and
figures by: Adam-Wan
Kenobi
|
|
|
I started
working on this diorama about 3 weeks ago. I have always wanted
to recreate this environment, since it feature one of my favorite
scenes of the entire Star Wars canon. As you probably guessed, I
am a huge Obi-Wan Kenobi fan. I prefer Alec Guinness' portrayal
of the Jedi Master, but I think Ewan is doing a fantastic job bringing
the younger Obi-Wan to life. To the left you can spy a wide shot
of the entire diorama. Eventually, I will create the exterior of
the house and perhaps a bit of a Tatooine landscape to set it
on. For now, however, I will keep the diorama relatively small
because of lack of space.

This is my first
diorama that features an interior shot. That means; I had to
create the floor, ceiling, walls, supports, etc. from scratch.
Needless to say, I got plenty of experience working with plaster while
making this diorama. Most of the props and furniture are made of
sculpy.

Good ol' R2 here,
really enjoys his new home. Beep Beep! Hehehe . . . Along with
this R2-D2 (Electronic FX version), I used the Luke Skywalker COMMTech
figure (with Skyhopper), the POTJ Obi-Wan (Ben) Kenobi Jedi Knight
figure, and the Flashback C-3PO figure to complete my diorama.

|
|
I did have to
customize the Ben Kenobi and C-3PO figures so I could put them in a
sitting pose. It's times like these, that I wish all figures had
knee articulation.

Here is a shot of the
east wall. Hanging on the support beam, is what looks like a
practice lightsaber. Strange eh? I thought so too, but it
is in the movie . . . I also created the box that housed Anakin's
lightsaber, from scratch (out of sculpy) and lined the inside with
Bantha fur (even though Obi-Wan probably wouldn't have). One of
the biggest pains in making this diorama was hanging articles on the
walls. Since Wal-Mart doesn't carry tacks that small, I finally
realized that sewing the articles into the wall was the best
method. Of course, I realized this after I super-glued my fingers together
several times trying other
methods. =)

What follows are film comparisons
from various parts of the scene in which Obi-Wan takes Luke back to
his hut (after the Tusken attack) in Star Wars: A New Hope. You may
notice that none of the scenes, I compare, include the holographic
Leia. That is because the R2-D2 with holographic Leia is one of
the few figures I don't have out of the package. But fear not, I
am currently looking for a cheap one on eBay. When I get the
figure in hand, I will update this diorama with more pics. To
the left we can see tired old Threepio asking Luke for a nap.
Being a droid is tough.
C-3PO: "Sir if
you will not be needing me, I will close down for a while"
Luke: "Sure go
ahead."
|
|
|
|
|
|
To the left we can see
old Ben getting Anakin's lightsaber out of storage.
Obi-Wan: "Your father
wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle
wouldn't allow it. He feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on
some damn fool idealistic crusade like your father did."
|
|
|
|
|
|
Here is a fateful
moment: Obi-Wan gives Luke his father's lightsaber.
Luke: "What is
it"?
Obi-Wan: "You
father's lightsaber. This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight.
Not as random or clumsy as a blaster. An elegant weapon for a
more civilized age."
|
|
|
|
|
|
Luke ignites the
weapon, while Obi-Wan reflects on the decline of the galaxy.
Obi-Wan: "For over a
thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and
justice in the Old Republic . . . before the dark times . . . before
the Empire."
|
|
|
Obi-Wan and Luke sit
down to discuss Luke's father and the force.
Luke: "How did my
father die"?
Obi-Wan: "A young
Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to
evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights.
He betrayed and murdered your father. Now the Jedi are all but
extinct. Vader was seduced by the dark side of the force."
Luke: "The
force"?
Obi-Wan: "The
force is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an energy field
created by all living things, it surrounds us penetrates us, it binds the
galaxy together."
|
|
|
|
|
|
Obi-Wan, understanding Luke's
Jedi heritage, make a pitch for Luke to become a Jedi, like his father.
Obi-Wan: "I need your
help Luke. She needs you help. I am getting to old for
this sort of thing."
Luke: "I can't
get involved. I have work to do. It's not that I like the
Empire, I hate it, but there is nothing I can do about it right
now. That's such a long way from here."
Obi-Wan: "That's you
uncle talking."
|
|
|
|
|
|
Luke remembers that he is late
getting home to attend to his uncle Owen's moisture vaporators, and he
realizes there will probably be "Hell to pay" for his
tardiness.
Luke: "My uncle
. . . how am I going to explain this?
Obi-Wan: "Learn about
the force Luke."
Luke: "Look, I
can take you as far as Anchorhead. You can get a transport there
to Mos Eisley or wherever your going."
Obi-Wan: "You must do
what you feel is right, of course."
