#7 The Facts On The Mormon Church
7. How do Mormon teachings differ from
Christian teachings?
Because Mormon theology is not Christian, it is easy to
compare the beliefs of Mormonism with the beliefs of Christianity. As an
introduction to this section, we offer the following chart contrasting basic
Mormon and Christian teachings.
Mormonism:
Their Bible
Unreliable
Incomplete as it is
Adds new revelations to God's Word
Unbiblical theological
presuppositions
utilized in interpretation
Christianity:
Bible
Reliable
Complete as it is
Rejects new revelations
Accepted hermeneutical rules utilized in interpretation
Mormonism:
God
Tritheism/polytheistic
Physical (evolved man)
Finite
Morally questionable
Organizer of eternal matter Sexual polygamist
Christianity:
God
Trinity/monotheistic
Spirit
Infinite
Holy
Creator of matter from nothing
Asexual
Mormonism:
Jesus
a god
Created
Earned salvation (exaltation to godhood)
Not virgin born
Polygamist
Christianity:
Jesus
God
Eternal
As eternal God neither salvation nor exaltation required
Virgin born
Unmarried
Mormonism:
Salvation
By works
Denies biblical atonement
Possible after death
Christianity:
Salvation
By grace
Affirms atonement
Impossible after death
Mormonism:
Death
"Purgatorial"; three celestial kingdoms; almost universalistic
Christianity:
Death
Eternal heaven or hell; no purgatory; not universalistic
Maintaining that Mormonism and Christianity
teach the same thing logically, historically, and doctrinally an indefensible
position. In the chapter 8, we will document the Latter-day Saints attitude
toward Christianity and some of the key doctrines of Mormonism and show why they
are not biblical.
