The Second Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians, Chapter Five

Our Heavenly Dwelling
<>< <>< ><> ><>

1. What did Paul say that he and the people in Corinth knew, what is this building, where is this building, how was it not built, what did Paul say they do in the meanwhile, what did Paul say they are longing to be, why did Paul say they longed for this, and why did Paul say for a while they are in this tent (earthly tent), they groan and are burdened?

Paul contrasts our earthly bodies ("earthly tent") and our future resurrection bodies ("a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands"). Paul clearly states that our present bodies make us groan, but when we die we will not be spirits without bodies ("be found naked"). We will have new bodies that will be perfect for our everlasting life.
Paul wrote as he did because the church at Corinth was in the heart of Greek culture, and many believers had difficulty with the concept of bodily resurrection. Greeks did not believe in a bodily resurrection. Most saw the afterlife as something that happened only to the soul, with the real person imprisoned in a physical body. They believed that at death the soul is released - there is no immortality for the body, and the soul enters an eternal state. But the Bible teaches that the body and soul are not permanently separated.
Paul describes our resurrected bodies in more detail in 1st Corinthians 15:46-58. We will still have personalities and recognizable characteristics in our resurrected bodies, but through Christ's work, our bodies will be better than we can imagine. The Bible does not tell us everything about our resurrected bodies, but we know they will be perfect, without sickness, disease, or pain.

Cross-reference Philippians 3:21
...(21)
who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body

Cross-reference Revelation 21:4
"...(4)
He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."

2. Whom did Paul tell the people in Corinth had made them for this very purpose (everlasting bodies at the resurrection), what did Paul say God has given them, and why did Paul say God had done this?

______________________________________________________________________________

The Holy Spirit within us is our guarantee that God will give us everlasting bodies at the resurrection (1:22). We have eternity in us now! This truth should give us great courage and patience to endure anything we might experience.

3. What did Paul tell the people in Corinth he and the others with him were always confident and knew about, how did Paul say he and the others with him live, how did Paul say he and the others didn't live, and what did Paul say he and the others with him would prefer?

Paul was not afraid to die, because he was confident of spending eternity with Christ. Of course, facing the unknown may cause us anxiety, and leaving loved ones hurts deeply, but if we believe in Jesus Christ, we can share Paul's hope and confidence of eternal life with Christ.
For those who believe in Christ, death is only a prelude to eternal life with God. We will continue to live. Let this hope give you confidence and inspire you to faithful service.

4. What did Paul tell the people in Corinth he and the others with him did, what did Paul say they all must appear before, and why did Paul say this must happen?

While eternal life is a free gift given on the basis of God's grace, each of us will still be judged by Christ.

<>< <>< ><> ><>

Cross-reference Ephesians 2:8, 9
(8)For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - (9)not by works, so that no one can boast.

<>< <>< ><> ><>

This judgment will reward us for how we have lived. God's gracious gift of salvation does not free us from the requirement for faithful obedience. All Christians must give account for how they have lived.

<>< <>< ><> ><>

Cross-reference Matthew 16:27
(27)For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done.

Cross-reference Romans 14:10-12
(10)You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God's judgment seat. (11)It is written:
" 'As surely as I live,' says the Lord,
           'every knee will bow before me;
every tongue will confess to God.' " (12)So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

Cross-reference 1st Corinthians 3:10-15

(10)By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. (11)For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. (12)If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, (13)his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. (14)If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. (15)If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.

5. Why did Paul tell the people in Corinth he and the others try to persuade men, what did Paul say was plain to God, what did Paul say he hoped it was for their conscience, what did Paul say he and the others with him were not trying to do, and why did Paul say they were doing this?

Those who "take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart" are the false preachers (see 2:17) who were concerned only about getting ahead in this world. They were preaching the gospel for money and popularity, while Paul and his companions were preaching out of concern for eternity. You can identify false preachers by finding out what really motivates them. If they are more concerned about themselves than about Christ, avoid them and their message.

6. Whom did Paul tell the people in Corinth it was for if he and the others with him were out of their mind, whom did Paul say it was for if he and the others with him were in their right minds, what did Paul say compels him and the others with him, what did Paul say the reason was for this, and why did Paul say Christ died for all?

______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________

Everything that Paul and his companions did was to honor God. Christ's love controlled their lives. Because Christ died for us, we also are dead to our old lives. Like Paul, we should no longer live to please ourselves; we should spend our lives pleasing Christ, who died for us and rose from the grave.

7. What did Paul say he and the others no longer did, whom did Paul say they once regarded in this way, but they do so no longer, and what did Paul say anyone is in Christ was?

______________________________________________________________________________

Christians are brand-new people on the inside. The Holy Spirit gives them new life, and they are not the same anymore. We are not reformed, rehabilitated, or reeducated - we are re-created (new creations), living in vital union with Christ.

<>< <>< ><> ><>

Cross-reference Colossians 2:6, 7

(6)So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, (7)rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

<>< <>< ><> ><>

At conversion we are not merely turning over a new leaf; we are beginning a new life under a new Master.

8. Where did Paul tell the people in Corinth that all of this came from, whom did God reconcile them to himself through, and what did Paul say God had given him and the others with him?

______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________

God brings us back to himself (reconciles us) by blotting out our sins and making us righteous.

<>< <>< ><> ><>

Cross-reference Ephesians 2:13-18
(13)But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.
(14)For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, (15)by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, (16)and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. (17)He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. (18)For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

<>< <>< ><> ><>

We are no longer God's enemies, or strangers or foreigners to him, when we trust in Christ. Because we have been reconciled to God, we have the privilege of encouraging others to do the same, and thus we are those who have the "ministry of reconciliation."

9. What did Paul tell the people in Corinth he and the others with him were, and what did Paul implore the people in Corinth on Christ's behalf?

______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________

An ambassador is an official representative on behalf of one country to another. As believers, we are Christ's ambassadors, sent with his message of reconciliation to the world. An ambassador of reconciliation has an important responsibility. We dare not take this responsibility lightly. How well are you fulfilling your commission as Christ's ambassador?

10. How did Paul say God made him (Jesus) who had no sin, and why did God do this?

______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________

When we trust in Christ, we make an exchange - our sin for his righteousness. Our sin was poured into Christ at his crucifixion. His righteousness is poured into us at our conversion. This is what Christians mean by Christ's atonement for sin. In the world, bartering works only when two people exchange goods of relatively equal value. But God offers to trade his righteousness for our sin - something of immeasurable worth for something completely worthless. How grateful we should be for his kindness to us.

Answers to 2nd Corinthians 5
<>< <>< ><> ><>

1. That if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God...an eternal house...in heaven...by human hands...groan...clothed with our heavenly dwelling...because when they are clothed, they will not be found naked...because they do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with their heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life
2. God...the Spirit as a deposit...he was guaranteeing what is to come
3. That as long as they are at home in the body they are away from the Lord...by faith...by sight...to be away from the body and at home with the Lord
4. They make it their goal to please him (the Lord), whether they were at home in the body or away from it...the judgment seat of Christ...so that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad
5. They know what it was to fear the Lord...what they were...that it was also plain...commend themselves (Paul and the others) to them again, but were giving them an opportunity to take pride in Paul and the others...so that they can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart
6. The sake of God...it is for them (the people in Corinth)...Christ's love...because they were convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died...so that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again
7. Regard anyone from a worldly point of view...Christ...a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
8. God...Christ...the ministry of reconciliation:
that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation
9. Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through them..."Be reconciled to God"...to be sin for us...so that in him we might become the righteousness of God
