I picked this one up for plane fodder and was pleasantly surprised. It
delivers plenty of action and semi-philosophy and tight scrapes. The story
follows Maya, a harlequin, who has to protect Gabriel, a traveler, and
kick some serious butt in between. A harlequin is an assassin trained
from childhood to be able to kick butt. It is their sworn duty to protect
travelers with their lives. Travelers are those few people who see the
world from a different perspective because they can travel outside their
bodies into outer realms. The only trouble is the Tabula is trying to
kill them. They need one traveler alive to build a quantum computer to
contact an advanced race in one of these realms to become rulers of the
world. Everything you need for a rousing adventure.
The pacing in this book is good, never a dull moment. The character of Maya is well written. She is a reluctant killer. I could see this being a movie on the same par as "The Matrix".
It leaves room for a sequel.
