Teacher Man: A Memoir Book review by Joel This is the third installment of Frank McCourt’s autobiographical masterpiece. In this book it starts on the first day of his teaching career, where he almost loses his job for eating a student’s sandwich in his class, and then on to his lack of training for the reality of teaching in a New York high school. What sets McCourt apart is his unflinching honesty, along with self-deprecating
humor. But it doesn’t get bogged down or sappy. This isn’t
a romantic look at teaching high school, and according to McCourt himself,
it hardly felt like teaching at all. It is also realistic advice for teachers
everywhere. I don’t think it is outdated at all. Visit Book Reader's Traverse Home Page for more selections.
