Schindler's List Book review by Joel I found this book in the used section at the local book store--A Book For All Seasons--in Leavenworth, Washington. I had seen the movie years ago and wanted to read the book that inspired Steven Spielberg’s movie. I must say that the movie pales. Although the imagery in the film haunts me, the book develops Oskar Schindler to an extent the movie doesn’t have time to. He is a walking contradiction which the book points out over and over throughout. He drinks to excess, he keeps more than one mistress, he parties with S.S. officers, spends money like it grows on trees and saves thousands of Jewish prisoners of war. The character of Commandant Goeth is even more evil in the book if that is possible. This is a novel with research backed up by survivors of the holocaust from the Schindler’s metal fabrication factory, from his family and other close sources. The author says the novel form is his forte, but the story is true. Most conversations were written record. This period of history fascinates me because I think we are always on the cusp of sinking into this misery again. If we forget, even if we don’t. Listening to Iran’s leader, Mahmoud Ahmadiejad spout off that the Holocaust was a myth, it is only a matter of time before the next generation comes up. The author deals with the subject matter in a caring but matter of fact prose that really grabs you and keeps you turning pages. This book I recommend highly. Joel.
