Mother of Pearl (Oprah's Book Club). Melinda Haynes. Washington Square Press. 2000.

Book review by Tracey
OK, this is one of those really good finds from the Goodwill store. Written in 1999, it is the author’s debut novel and was apparently an Oprah recommendation. It is a wonderful story full of interesting characters who do ordinary things that are viewed by the reader as extraordinary. Set in Mississippi and Alabama in the 1950s, it tells the story of Valuable Korner, Even Grade, and Joody Two Sun among others, addressing race relations between black and white in a small town. I really enjoyed it, and although I’ve read it nine years after it was written, it of course seemed like a brand new story to me. I have not gone on the Web to research Ms. Haynes, but I hope to come across more stories as well written and easily read as this one. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Tracey.
