The Memory Keeper's Daughter
. Kim Edwards. Penguin. 2006.
Book review by Joel
This book is really good. However there is a “questions for discussion”
at the end, which to me is kind of like your best friend giving you a
cupcake because you have to go to an acupuncturist later to have you appendix
removed using only acupuncture needles and squid tentacles. It’s
sweet until the ending.
This is a story of how a child is born with downs syndrome and is given
to a nurse to be dropped off at an institution. The nurse takes the child
but keeps her and moves to another state, and raises her as her own. The
doctor was the husband of the woman having the child who was one of twins,
the other being normal. The doctor lied to his wife and said that the
other child died at birth, and then covered it up.
There are a lot of twists and turns in the story. The characters are very
well developed and realistic. And at the end of the story……….well
I won't spoil it. But it is a very well developed and intricate story
with a sweeping plot line that follows the family for 25 years.
I would recommend this one.
