Lords of the North (The Saxon Chronicles Series #3). Bernard Cornwell. HarperCollins. 2007.

Book review by Tracey
This third, and dare we think last installment of Mr. Cornwell’s Saxon Tales, is a continuance of the story of Uhtred of Bebbanburg. A Saxon who is raised as a Dane, Uhtred has divided loyalties, a sentiment that many from this time in history may have shared. In this story, the last of the trilogy, Uhtred leaves the south of Britain, having helped Alfred the Great fend off the Danes. He goes North to try and reclaim his birthright which is held by his uncle. What happens to him on the way is the basis of the story. Being an action tale, it can easily be imagined what kind of things Uhtred might encounter. The trick is how Mr. Cornwell tells us. There is, as always in this author’s novels, a great deal of detail. The reader is immersed in it until one feels as if they are along for the ride in the flesh. There is an abundance of death and gore, revenge, and honor. Often by the third book in a trilogy the story is getting a little old. I don’t find this to be so in Mr. Cornwell’s books. There is always plenty of adventure.

Tracey.
