The Little Prince. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Harcourt, Inc. 1943. English translation by Richard Howard, 2000. 83 pp

Review by Jane
This book was recommended by Janet from the book club. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry dedicated this children’s book to his best friend, Leon Werth.  Incidentally, the story tells of a peculiar friendship between two people who are quite different but run into each other in the desert.  But the main storyline is centered on the little prince, who is from another planet. He sets out to learn what is important in life, and lands on earth meeting the pilot who is stranded. The little prince has quite a time with a rose on his planet.  He takes very good care of her and enjoys her company.  But then wonders about the meaning of it all.  The rose is quite complicated.  She requires a lot of care and can be very demanding.  Consuelo de Saint-Exupéry, Antoine’s wife, felt that she was the rose in this story.  Their love affair was very tumultuous.

The prince explains to the pilot all the misadventures he has before he gets to earth, where he met lots of odd characters whose lives seemed to not have much meaning.

This book would be very enjoyable for a young person just starting to read on their own.  It could also be read aloud.  For an adult, it would be good to read The Little Prince along with Consuelo de Saint-Exupéry’s book, The Tale of the Rose:  The Passion That Inspired The Little Prince.  The stories together give a clear picture of the relationship between Consuelo and Antoine.

Jane.
